Calderdale Youth Justice Service undertakes assessments and interventions with children and young people aged 10 -18 years of age who have committed a criminal offence or are at risk of offending. The service’s priority is to prevent offending and re-offending by addressing criminogenic factors and support young people’s skills and strengths to become valued members of the community.

This post is part of Alternative Provision Specialist Taskforces (APST).

APST is a workforce model which builds capacity and skills in Alternative Provision schools (PRUs and AP Academies). Taskforces are teams of co-located specialists based onsite within AP schools, undertaking integrated, child-centred work with pupils, responsively information-sharing, as well as sharing their expertise and embedding their practice within the whole school. Teams can be made up of specialists which aim to respond to the full range of AP pupils’ needs. These specialists have included: educational psychologists, family support and social workers, mental health therapists, post-16 workers, speech and language therapists, youth justice workers and youth workers.


The post holder will work with children and young people (age 10-17) who have been referred to the Youth Justice Service and/or attend the Alternative Provision where the post will be based. This will include one to one and group-based work.


The post holder will be required to provide support, encouragement, and supervision to enable children and young people to engage in meaningful work. This could taken many forms and include:


• Deliver and facilitate groupwork in community and school settings.

• The preparation, intervention and monitoring of appropriate intervention plans, and recording all actions on the information management system.

• Undertake assessments in consultation with young people and their families / carers, including statutory and voluntary agencies, that inform the intervention plans of young people and the management of risk and vulnerability.

• Supervise and deliver interventions that support young people and families

• Encourage engagement with environmental projects, arts-based projects, awareness raising campaigns, supporting local charity work etc. The post holder will be able to develop their own ideas for community projects and activities for young people to complete.

• Encourage engagement with positive activities including health and wellbeing, involvement in group work and activities that will develop a child sense of victim empathy and the need to repair harm.

• Support in diverting children and young people from and preventing further ASB or offending that impacts their communities.


The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate strong organisational and communication skills and be familiar with collaborative working and engaging children and young people both in group and 1-2-1 settings.


They will have GCSE Grade A-C or above / Level 4 in English, or demonstrable experience. Please see the person specification for more details.
