Summary

Diabetes and Endocrinology services at Addenbrookes are based in the Wolfson Diabetes and Endocrine Clinic (WDEC), which is situated in the Addenbrookes Treatment centre within the Wellcome Trust-MRC Institute of Metabolic Science (IMS), a purpose-built centre dedicated to research, education and clinical care in the field of endocrine and metabolic disease. The department benefits from close links with the University of Cambridge, and as a result has been and continues to be involved in pioneering research into many aspects of the management of diabetes. The role also involves a contribution to the in-patient service, which includes some general medical patients, but has no involvement in the general medical on-call rota. The current contribution to the in-patient service is 7-10 weeks per year whole time equivalent. Cambridge is a lovely place to live and work. It is a thriving city which has witnessed remarkable growth in recent years, driven in part by the development of the science and technology sectors here, as well as the world-famous university. We are uniquely placed in having access to a vibrant and diverse cultural scene on our own doorstep, as well as stunning countryside close by, while also benefiting from excellent links to London (direct trains to Kings Cross Station in under 50 minutes). We are lucky to have many excellent schools both within the city and in surrounding areas. The applicant will be able to offer expert clinical opinion on all aspects of the management of diabetes, and will be involved in teaching and training of junior staff, medical students and other healthcare professionals. Working on the Cambridge Biomedical Campus also offers unrivalled opportunity to collaborate with Cambridge University and other local research institutes and pharmaceutical companies, as the campus continues its rapid expansion and consolidates its position as one of Europes leading centres of biomedical research. The applicant will be particularly encouraged to contribute to or lead translational and clinical research using the excellent clinical research facilities allied to the Institute of Metabolic Science within the adjacent Cambridge Clinical Research Centre. Please refer to the Job description and Person specification attached for further details on the main responsibilities and duties for this post.
