Summary
Clinical Fellow in Medical Microbiology
The opportunity for a Clinical Fellowship in Infection Sciences - Medical Microbiology has arisen, based at North Bristol NHS Trust, Southmead Hospital. The post is for a period of 12 months,commencing August 2025. The exact start date is negotiable. Both full time and less than full time will be considered, based on previous experience.
This would be an ideal opportunity to experience working in a tertiary referral centre with a prominent Microbiology department and would suit those interested in a career in Infection Specialties, or those with experience who want to extend their knowledge.
This post has neither Royal College or Postgraduate approval for training. However, the post is educationally sound and well supported, with excellent opportunities for gaining experience in clinical Infection management.
This post will be based at North Bristol NHS Trust (NBT), Southmead Hospital in Infection Sciences (Medical Microbiology), but the applicant may have to spend time on-site at the Bristol Royal Infirmary.
Full Registration with the GMC is essential. Experience and familiarity with UK hospital systems and practices or equivalent is essential.
The post includes on call provision for our infection services, including supporting local HCID services.
The post holder will provide clinical microbiology services to North Bristol NHS Trust and UHBW (University Hospitals Bristol and Weston NHS Foundation Trust) depending upon the requirement of clinical services, and includes on-call service supporting the local infection departments, including HCID (High Consequence Infectious Diseases) cover.
The department is large and highly regarded, providing excellent educational opportunities and experience in the infection issues related to patients in all the major specialties, including; Burns and Plastics, Renal Transplantation, Major Trauma and Neurosurgery. The Antimicrobial Reference Laboratory (ARL), which is on-site, provides reference advice for the UK and Ireland and is internationally renowned. This would be an ideal opportunity to experience working in a tertiary referral centre with a prominent Microbiology department and would suit those interested in a career in Infection Specialties or those with experience who want to extend their knowledge. The Trust has teaching status and is linked with the University of Bristol and the University of the West of England.
Under the supervision of Consultant staff, the post holder will contribute to and gain experience in the prevention, diagnosis and management of patients with infection.
The post holder will participate fully in the clinical aspects of the laboratory process, validating the results produced by the laboratory and providing clinical advice to clinical colleagues with respect to Microbiology results and management with patients with infections. This will include but is not limited to;
Advise on appropriate investigations.
Advise on and apply the principles of antibiotic therapy.
Monitor the response to therapy.
Contribute to the reporting of and management of infections with Public Health implications.
A daily Ward Round will be undertaken in the ITU; visits to other specialist units and patients are conducted as required and in addition there are weekly MDTs with multiple specialties.
On call duties for the infection departments.
