We’re looking for an experienced person to join the Wessex Field Monitoring Team and undertake environmental monitoring including river, bathing water quality, effluents, macroinvertebrates, diatoms, groundwater and fisheries.
You will work towards qualifying as an Officer-in-Charge for electric fishing surveys and will be involved in boat work, so experience of fieldwork and biosecurity good practice is essential. You will be using a handheld scheduling tool and utilising this technology to complete work efficiently. You will maintain, interpret, and input data into monitoring systems and databases. You will be an effective communicator, liaising with site contacts, members of the public and internal customers. You will train and mentor other team members to ensure consistent delivery to a high standard.
The field work can be physically demanding, and you will be required to work in all weathers. You’ll be working alone for long periods of time, so you’ll need to prioritise your Health, Safety and Wellbeing, be self-motivated and organised. You will also have an incident role.
The team
We collect field-based samples and environmental data for local, national and statutory requirements. The data collected provides key information to serve diverse community and environmental needs.
This post will work predominantly across the Bristol area, Somerset, West Devon and North Wiltshire and occasionally in Dorset and Southern Wiltshire. You will be expected to cross boundaries to support other teams. This is a field-based role and requires long, extensive driving in urban and rural locations.
Experience/skills required
A full UK driving licence is essential for this role.

• Field sample collection experience
• Training and mentoring staff
• Able to work independently as part of a dispersed team
• Good organisational skills
• Working in water confidently and safely
• Ability to communicate effectively with external and internal customers
• Experience of using standard IT packages to deliver work as well as more specialised systems and databases
• Experience of health, safety and wellbeing procedures including carrying out risk assessments
• Experience of biosecurity procedures
• Confidence in driving long distances in urban and rural environments
Desirable:
• Electric fishing experience
• Ecology sampling including kick sampling for macroinvertebrates
• Freshwater fish identification
