This role focuses on enhancing and expanding the Urology service at Homerton University Hospital. Initially starting as a locum position, there is a clear pathway to transition into a substantive post. The selected candidate will serve as a Urology Consultant specializing in General Urology, predominantly within an elective care environment.
Expertise in open and robotic reconstructive urological surgery is highly desirable to meet the growing demands from other departments, including assistance with complex gynecological and general surgical cases. The role includes access to mentorship opportunities with the clinical lead and other experienced mentors as needed.
Key responsibilities include providing outpatient and surgical services at Homerton Hospital. The candidate will manage 2WW urology diagnostics, lead elective theatre lists, conduct face-to-face and remote clinics, and participate in regular MDT meetings. Operating sessions will be held on-site at Homerton. Additionally, the candidate will support the department's electronic "Advice and Guidance" service for local GPs, with one allocated weekday dedicated to this function.

Diagnose and manage patients within the Urology Department, with a preference for candidates possessing a special interest in functional urology and experience in reconstructive urology.

Develop and expand areas of special interest through mentorship and support.

Independently manage clinics, including specialist clinics and surgical sessions, while adhering to professional standards.

Handle in-patient responsibilities and emergency cases as needed.

Develop and manage day and in-patient elective surgical procedures, lead outpatient clinics, and actively engage in the management of the specialty.

Maintain ongoing responsibility for patient care and ensure the effective functioning of clinics under their charge.

Fulfill administrative duties related to patient care and clinic operations, while actively participating in medical audit processes.

Support the professional development of trainees and allied health professional colleagues.

Contribute to the teaching and evaluation of medical undergraduates and junior doctors.

Stay engaged in continuous professional development to facilitate successful appraisal and revalidation.

General Duties of Consultant Staff:

Provide high-quality care and expertise within the specialty, ensuring adherence to evidence-based practices and professional standards.Take an active role in the multidisciplinary team to facilitate comprehensive patient care. Contribute to service development and improvement initiatives within the department.

Management

Lead and oversee the management of clinical services, ensuring efficiency and effectiveness. Actively participate in departmental and organizational meetings to align clinical goals with strategic objectives. Collaborate with other healthcare professionals to enhance resource utilization and service delivery.

Support to Junior Doctors

Supervise, mentor, and provide guidance to junior doctors to foster their professional growth and ensure safe clinical practices. Encourage continuous learning by supporting junior staff in their educational and career development needs. Act as a role model in clinical decision-making, professional conduct, and teamwork.

Administration

Maintain accurate, timely, and comprehensive medical records in line with organizational policies and legal requirements. Participate in workforce planning, recruitment, and appraisal processes as needed. Ensure compliance with policies and regulations related to patient safety, clinical governance, and confidentiality.

Audit

Conduct and participate in regular clinical audits to monitor and improve the quality of patient care. Implement necessary changes based on audit findings, ensuring alignment with best practices. Facilitate audit activities involving junior staff to promote learning and quality improvement.

Teaching

Deliver formal and informal teaching sessions for medical students, junior doctors, and allied healthcare professionals. Encourage and promote a culture of continuous professional development and knowledge sharing. Collaborate with academic institutions to support research and training programs.

Continuing Medical Education

Actively engage in continuing professional development activities to maintain and enhance clinical knowledge and skills. Attend relevant courses, conferences, and seminars to stay updated on advancements in the field. Foster a culture of lifelong learning within the department.

Research

Participate in research activities, contributing to the advancement of medical knowledge and practice. Support junior doctors and colleagues in research projects, including study design, data analysis, and publication. Collaborate with external organizations and academic institutions to promote innovative research.
