Job Title: Senior Clinical Fellowship in Shoulder and Elbow Surgery Department: Trauma Related Services - Leeds General Infirmary Elective Orthopaedics - Chapel Allerton Hospital JOB PURPOSE The Leeds Upper Limb Unit (LULU) Fellow will be expected to develop knowledge both clinically and surgically over a 6 month or 1 year fellowship. The fellow will also develop sufficient knowledge and leadership skills in order for them to take up a Consultant role in any department, dealing with a complex shoulder and elbow workload, including GIRFT Hubs for Total Elbow Arthroplasty. THE LEEDS UPPER LIMB UNIT (LULU) The service comprises seven Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeons who undertake all aspects of upper limb reconstruction. The case mix is varied and each Consultant has their own field of interest and expertise. PARTICULARS OF APPOINTMENT We encourage fellows to be aiming to take up a consultant post at the end of the appointment; the fellows role will be tailored to each successful candidate. This may mean that you spend more time with selected members of the LULU team than others. The role will evolve such that you will be taught the assessment of complex shoulder and elbow conditions, leading to a supervised trauma and elective operative practice. With development of the Fellows portfolio, more independent practice will be expected, both in clinics and in theatre, within your competency level. DUTIES The Fellow will assist in clinics (trauma and elective), reviewing and communicating with inpatients, and operating lists as appropriate (adults and children). There will be flexible sessions to include research and administration. Secretarial support will be provided for the post. LULU has one or two registrars and the successful candidate will be involved in their support and training throughout the fellowship. The training of our registrars in Trauma & Orthopaedics with regards to upper limb surgery is as important to us as advanced fellowship training. It is vital that the successful candidate understands this and is able to balance their desire to learn alongside supporting more junior colleagues. There is no on-call commitment; however there will be an expectation as part of the role to offer 12 sessions per annum (pro rata) of either weekday or weekend trauma lists or extra waiting list work whether that is in clinic or theatre. This will be agreed with the Lead Clinical Supervisor within the LULU, who will liaise with LGI or CAH Managers to arrange. LULU Consultants Mr Sam Vollans (Elective & Major Trauma) Lead Supervisor A shoulder and elbow surgeon with a specific interest in the elbow with large volumes of primary and revision elbow arthroplasty including massive bone loss and infection, elbow arthroscopy and deformity correction. He has specific interest in custom jigs and implants utilising CT guided/3D printed jigs regularly in his practice. He is also involved with Hand/Arm Transplant Team and has an elective paediatric shoulder and elbow interest including the bony manifestations of Obstetric Brachial Plexus Injury and congenital deformity. Mr Paul Cowling (Elective and General Trauma) A shoulder and elbow surgeon covering the full breadth of practice. He has a specific interest in both primary and revision shoulder arthroplasty and rotator cuff disorders. He also has research interests in these areas, and is on the ODEP committee for shoulder replacements. Mr Dan Henderson (Elective & General Trauma) A shoulder and elbow surgeon covering the full breadth of practice. He has a special interest in complex shoulder arthroscopy; massive/irreparable cuff tears (including SCR), but particularly the arthroscopic management of complex and revision instability (Arthro-Latarjet / free bone block). His academic and research interests include the use of functional outcome measures in the virtual surveillance of patient progress. He works in collaboration with the University of Leeds Institute of Medical and Biological Engineering. Mr Harish Kapoor (Major Trauma (Upper Limb)) A very experienced trauma surgeon with a specific interest in the upper limb within the context of major/polytrauma. Mr David Limb (Elective) His practice includes the elbow and general shoulder problems (anatomic arthroplasty, arthrodesis and tendon transfers). He is Past President of EFFORT and member of the Council of Management of the BJJ. He is Editor in Chief of Orthopaedics and Trauma and Associate Editor of Shoulder and Elbow. He is an examiner for the International FRCS (Tr&Orth) and Chairman of the DMC for Profher 2 Trial. Mr Mark Philipson (Elective & General Trauma) A shoulder and elbow surgeon with specific interest and skills in primary and revision shoulder arthroplasty, including custom and patient matched implants. This is one facet of his busy S&E practice. Miss Lt Col Charlotte Tunstall (Major Trauma (Upper Limb)) A general orthopaedic military surgeon in Major Trauma, with a specific interest in the upper limb.
