Summary


The Department administratively resides within the specialty of Obstetrics and Gynaecology (Diana, Princess of Wales Hospital).

The Obstetrics and Gynaecology Department is based on one site in Grimsby although a few antenatal and gynaecology clinic sessions also occur in Louth and Mablethorpe, 30 miles to the West. The maternity unit, NICU and administrative offices are all located within the Family Services building in Grimsby. Antenatal clinics, gynaecology out-patients and colposcopy and the gynaecology in-patients beds are all located within Women’s Health Unit, again within the Building.

In 2023/24 there were 2,121 deliveries in the Maternity Unit. There is Consultant Anaesthetist cover during working hours and a 24-hour epidural service is in operation. Home confinements are well established in the area and are the responsibility of the midwifery staff.



We have facilities for outpatient hysteroscopy and colposcopy, early pregnancy assessment, pregnancy advisory including the provision of medical terminations, and pre-operative assessment. Pre-operative assessment, medical terminations and early pregnancy assessment are nurse based with medical lead. We also have the use of a variable number of day beds in the day case unit.

The post holder’s primary responsibility is the day-to-day care of the patients in their allocated ward and taking part in the 1st ON CALL ROTA. The post holder will receive instruction in procedures and help with management from senior colleagues. He/she will be expected to know their patients in detail and to present them on ward rounds.

• The post-holder will be assisted in developing his own areas of interest and expertise to augment the provision of the service. The post-holder will maintain his standard of performance by keeping knowledge and skills up to date.

• The post-holder will provide cover for absent colleagues in line with his service agreements with the trust, both within and outside normal working hours, along with flexible use of time depending on the needs of the department

• The post-holder will assist in ensuring that preoperative checks have been carried out and investigations are to hand and discharge summary information completed.

• To attend the labour ward, gynae ward and theatre and clinics
