Job Overview
The Special Educational Needs Coordinator (SENCO) plays a pivotal role in ensuring that children with special educational needs receive the appropriate support and resources to thrive in an educational setting. The SENCO will work closely with teachers, parents, and external agencies to develop tailored educational plans that cater to the individual needs of students. This position requires a compassionate individual with a strong understanding of special education practices and behaviour management techniques.
Duties
1. Supporting Children with SEND
Identify and assess children’s individual needs through observations, monitoring, and referrals.
Develop, implement, and review Individual Education Plans (IEPs) or equivalent tailored support plans.
Ensure inclusive practice is embedded across the nursery to meet the developmental and emotional needs of all children.
Provide interventions and strategies to support children’s learning and development.
2. Leadership and Collaboration
Act as the key point of contact for SEND within the nursery, offering advice and guidance to staff and families.
Work closely with the Nursery Manager to ensure the nursery meets statutory requirements for SEND provision.
Coordinate and lead meetings with parents and external professionals, including Speech and Language Therapists, Educational Psychologists, and Local Authority SEN officers.
Develop and deliver training to staff on SEND-related topics, such as early identification of needs, strategies for inclusion, and working with families.
3. Administration and Compliance
Maintain accurate and up-to-date records of children with SEND, including assessments, referrals, and progress tracking.
Ensure compliance with the SEND Code of Practice (2015) and other relevant legislation and policies.
Liaise with local authorities to secure funding, resources, and additional support for children with SEND.
Contribute to nursery inspections by ensuring all SEND policies and procedures are implemented effectively.
4. Working with Parents and Families
Build positive relationships with parents, offering regular communication and support regarding their child’s progress.
Provide guidance and information on accessing external services, funding, and support networks.
Promote a collaborative approach, encouraging parents to be actively involved in their child’s learning journey.
Qualifications:
Level 3 (or higher) qualification in Early Years Education and Childcare (Essential).
Recognised SENCO training (Essential).
Paediatric First Aid qualification (Desirable).
Experience:
Experience working with children aged 0-5 years in an early years setting (Essential).
Proven experience supporting children with SEND, including implementing IEPs and liaising with external professionals (Essential).
Skills and Knowledge:
Strong knowledge of the SEND Code of Practice (2015) and other relevant frameworks.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills for working with staff, parents, and professionals.
Ability to plan, implement, and evaluate inclusive learning strategies.
Strong organizational and record-keeping skills.
