Summary
THE TEACHING COMMITMENT The teaching will involve a range of activities such as tutorials, skills laboratory, bedside teaching, and dedicated teaching clinics on an out-patient basis. Time is allocated for preparation of tutorials, lectures & teaching materials such as handouts. The teaching fellow will be also encouraged to show initiative & develop other teaching ideas such as student case presentations and student grand rounds. A major emphasis of the teaching will be focused on the core curriculum and clinical skills required for the year 3 students during their attachment to the campus. There will also be basic clinical teaching of a very general clinical nature to the three-week introductory course in year 1 & 2 (with the emphasis on history taking) and a subsequent first 8-week secondment at the start of year 3 (with the emphasis on system clinical examination). The post holder will also actively participate in ensuring students receive excellent pastoral care when on the campus. Although the focus is mainly on Year 3 students the TF will have commitment for general medical teaching to Final Year 6 Students. (for detail see below). In addition to teaching undergraduates the post-holder may be asked to teach on one of the many postgraduate courses run on the site, where relevant to their chosen discipline, and to the in-house junior staff both medical and non-medical Once a year TF will be helping at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital on SIM program for PFA students and attending Brunel Medical School to help with teaching and workshops. Organizational Responsibilities There will be an organisational role. This will involve helping the undergraduate organiser and DCS on the campus to draw up the medical teaching timetables co-ordinating with the leads and block leads for each module blocks. There may also be involvement in helping to establish a patient database for use in dedicated teaching clinics. The teaching fellow will also be expected to co-ordinate the end of attachment Mock OSCE, Case Assessments & prepare and mark other small tests and help organise the clinical component of the final MBBS. He/she will become an OSCE examiner after suitable training and co-ordinate Year 3 final OSCE exams on site. Post Graduate Degree/Education The successful applicant will be given time and encouraged to study for a higher research degree and to avail themselves of some of the modular courses leading to certificates in education and learning organised by Imperial College and/or the Royal College of Physicians. Undergraduate will support part funding for Certificate in Medical Education subject to eligibility and availability of funds. Office Accommodation The teaching fellows share an office and have access to computing facilities as well as administrative secretarial help via Undergraduate office. Regular meetings and reviews are held with the DCS. Teaching Fellows must be on site everyday of the week except when attending college to teach or for workshop. Undergraduate department has teaching rooms available for quite work if the TF office is occupied.
