The post holder will be supported to attain independent practice in lower GI endoscopy.Trainees will be responsible for delivering a high-quality service to potentially complex patient groups, referred in from primary care, surgical, gastroenterology, and other clinical sources.Trainees will understand the importance of, and be able to obtain informed consent, making judgements on patient capacity, preferences & suitability for the procedure.As experience develops, the trainee will build upon the information provided from the referral sources and tailor accurate pre-procedural patient assessment, including presenting complaint, fitness for procedure/co-morbidity, and medication history.Trainees will administer IV opioids, sedation and topical local anaesthetic for procedural comfort, under supervision and mentor guidance. They will build to self-directed administration of these medications under PGDs with eventual role progression to independent nurse prescribing.Throughout their training trainees will provide skilled diagnostic endoscopy, under supervision, developing the ability to make diagnoses, recognise pathology, and understand/facilitate the appropriate management required.Trainees will be responsible for coordinating and directing the endoscopy nursing team in the provision of care within the endoscopy rooms.Trainees will complete a competency portfolio which demonstrates high quality, consistent training. It enables trainees to capture & evidence their learning & development.Trainees will acquire advanced knowledge on anatomy & pathophysiology in relation to the gastrointestinal tractTrainees will be supported to ensure confidence & ability in advanced clinical reasoning & decision makingTrainees will be supported to develop increased accountability.Trainees will complete the JAG Basic Skills in lower GI endoscopy & undertake clinical in-house practical skills training to achieve JAG certification on supervised, dedicated training endoscopy lists.Trainees will attend study days at a university, leading to academic accreditation.Trainees will meet regularly with their local mentor/training lead.Trainees will communicate with patients directly at the point of diagnosis providing post-procedural advice as required, promoting health and providing practical advice/support for patients.Trainees will be required to input data into the endoscopy reporting system as an accurate record of the procedure performed. This will include the reason for the procedure, clinical findings and a detailed management plan.Maintain personal standards of conduct and behaviour, which are consistent with the Trust and the Nursing & Midwifery Council (NMC) standards. Ensure the efficient use of department resources.Contribute to the JAG accreditation programme as required. If successful this vacancy will require a Standard DBS check at a cost of £26.50. This cost will be deducted from your first Trust salary In addition to this it will be a condition of your employment that you will join the DBS update service and pay the annual subscription fee of £16.
