Summary


The post holder will be responsible for ensuring the patient is fit for an anaesthetic during surgery. This will involve taking a patients full medical history, and the ordering of investigations as deemed necessary.


The post holder will identify training needs, plan, implement and evaluate educational activities for students, new starters and existing members of non-medical staff (Band 1-6) within their directorate in the Division. However, this will only be 40% of their role as the Pre-operative assessment nurse role will be the predominant aspect of covering and running Pre-operative clinics in our specialist areas of ENT/Plastics, Head and Neck Cancer and Oral / Maxillofacial. The role will require a clinical expert in this area to share their knowledge and expertise through local training and development for all members of the teams.

The main duties of the POA nurse role is to access a patients suitability and fitness for surgery and anaesthesia using agreed protocols. The successful post holder will be expected to take a full detailed patient history. Carry out a Clinical examination of the patient. Where identified you will be required to order diagnostic tests and action results obtained.



The post holder will work 60% of their time clinically (in the numbers) in each of the three SSOPD areas as mentioned above covering POA clinics as predominantly a POA nurse. The further 40% will be designated in the CPE role to work with students, new starters and existing staff especially those who are doing post graduate studies and research. This time will also includng identifying training and education needs and planning, implementing and evaluating education activities in their clinical area of practice.
