The successful candidate will hold a key role in BBC Policy team. The team is responsible for a wide range of high profile BBC related policy areas that are often priorities for DCMS Ministers and No.10.

The BBC Policy team sits within the wider Media and International Directorate (MINT) which covers a broad range of work on sectors including: TV, radio, press, and advertising; as well as having a key role leading the department’s international work.

Job description

The successful candidate will join the BBC Policy team, and work in a high-profile role focused on an engaging and exciting subject area relevant to the whole of the UK public, and people across the globe.

The team is focused on the upcoming BBC Charter Review, which sets the framework for the BBC for the future, whilst ensuring its independence from Government. Audience viewing habits are rapidly changing, with people increasingly turning to social media and online platforms for content. The Charter Review is a rare opportunity to look at the role of the BBC in this context, including its responsibilities both to audiences but also to the wider media industry, and how it is regulated.

This is an area of significant political interest and you’ll be developing policy on specific topics to support advice going to Ministers and senior officials. You’ll hone your advisory skills and take the lead, ensuring decisions are made and driving the process to get there. You’ll utilise existing analytical and policy-making skills, working closely with those across other teams such as analysts, legal advisers, and other policy leads to ensure we have a BBC that is able to benefit from the opportunities and meet the challenges of the future.

The role is likely to include elements of the following:

• Leading on the development, design and implementation of policy to inform decision-making
• Building relationships with a range of stakeholders internal and external to government; and
• Drafting advice and briefings for ministers and senior officials on high profile BBC policy issues.

Person specification

The ideal candidate will have the following key skills and experience:

Essential criteria:

• A proven ability to take on and proactively lead on particularly complex and contentious policy questions that require consideration of the bigger picture. You should be comfortable driving thinking, analysis and assessment of different options and providing recommendations to support effective strategic decision making by senior stakeholders.
• Strong written and oral communication skills, including the ability to succinctly explain complex and/or technical issues to diverse stakeholders.
• A team player, able to build strong relationships with colleagues and stakeholders from different background and disciplines to deliver common goals.
• Able to proactively and autonomously prioritise your time, and that of others, to deliver shared team goals in a time-pressured environment.

Desirable criteria:

• Experience working on complex policy issues.
• Knowledge of working with lawyers and analysts in a policy making environment.
• Knowledge or interest in working on media policy.
