Summary

Key responsibilities:

• Managing a small working city farm that showcases an assortment of animals as well as a café.

• Taking care of breeding livestock. Calving, farrowing, and kidding the larger farm animal species. Liaising with our Veterinary team when required.

• Managing the daily welfare programme of all animals and birds at the farm. Setting own work priorities and organising an appropriate staff routine of proactive inspection and care, including regular feeding, cleaning and watering, vaccinations, basic medical treatments, and organising routine specialist care such as farrier services.

• Managing and supervising the farm staff and volunteers, directing their work according to the service need and ensuring compliance with safe working practices and the council’s policies, procedures, and Code of Conduct.

• Taking accountability for compliance with Government legislation and requirements related to livestock farm management and maintaining all required medical and animal records necessary for legal compliance, good farm practice, and management.

• Managing safe visitor access to the publicly accessible areas of the farm during opening hours; including opening up to the public at 9am and closing the farm at 4pm/5pm, depending on the time of the year.

• Facilitating basic maintenance of farm buildings, fences, gates, and animal pens for the safety and welfare of the animals and the visiting public.

Requirements:

• Livestock animal care qualification, farm techniques.

• NVQ level 3 farm management or equivalent.

Working hours:

• 8.30am to 5.30pm with breaks in the morning, lunchtime and afternoon.

• Out-of-hours flexibility will be required to attend to any unplanned animal illness and during birthing periods.

• This role will be required to work every other weekend, having every Friday off in lieu of the weekend work rota.
