Summary

There are 5.6m smaller businesses in the UK, accounting for 99.9% of the UK private sector business population and employing 16.3m people. They are therefore at the heart of the Government’s mission to deliver economic growth.

The Business Finance Policy team helps more small businesses access the finance they need to start, grow and get ahead. We do this by advising Ministers on access to finance policy, and working closely with the British Business Bank, a DBT Partner Organisation, to develop and deliver the Government’s access to finance programmes. The BBB works in partnership with over 180 delivery partners to enable around £12.4 billion of additional finance to small and medium-sized businesses. It supports both debt and equity finance, helping to promote regional growth, back start-ups, and provide investment in the UK’s high-growth businesses. It also manages multi-billion Covid support schemes on behalf of the Government.

We are currently recruiting for a strategy and stakeholder adviser to build relationships across Government and industry and develop the case for targeted interventions in finance markets.

  • You will support delivery of strategic direction and stakeholder engagement for the Business Finance team.
  • You will work with internal and external stakeholders developing, implementing and monitoring the strategic objectives of the Business Finance team.
  • You will be responsible for building relationships that support delivery of the Business Finance objectives and for developing and maintaining strong stakeholder engagement plans.
  • You will work across Government to align the work of Business Finance with wider objectives, creating and maintaining strong links that help deliver the best outcomes for the team.
  • You will also be responsible for the Department’s relationship with lenders to smaller businesses, including High Street banks, specialist lenders and community-based finance providers. This can include site visits, formal meetings and account management – whatever is best-suited to that relationship.

You will draft briefings for ministers and senior officials on aspects of business finance policy. You will also work with other colleagues to draft responses to correspondence and Parliamentary Questions to help demonstrate the impact of our work externally.
