About the Government Communications Profession

Our mission is to deliver exceptional public service communications that make a difference.
People work in government communications because what we do matters. We explain the objectives and policies of the government of the day. We provide clarity and reassurance to the public at times of crisis. We support businesses to grow. We protect our environment. We help those in need to access support.
Government Communications is the professional body for all public service communicators working in government. Our membership incorporates people working throughout government in a wide range of communications disciplines and specialities across 25 ministerial departments, 21 non-ministerial departments and more than 300 agencies in addition to other public bodies.

It's an exciting time to be a communications professional in government. The Government Communications Strategy has developing people at its heart, in order to equip them with the skills needed to operate effectively in a rapidly-evolving world. As a key enabler of this, the Academy team is responsible for shaping and delivering the learning offer, including our flagship programme called Advance, with the aim of building and maintaining world class skills, and the capability and talent of communicators right across government.

The field of communications is rapidly changing, with the advent of AI and other technologies offering new possibilities but raising practical and ethical questions.

Against this backdrop, communicators in government will need new knowledge and skills to equip them to deliver effective and innovative communications for the public.

With a focus on engaging, effective and topical learning content, you will create and deliver learning experiences and assets for the Academy. In addition to our flagship programme for practitioners, experts and leaders, Advance, we are introducing new short-form learning; redeveloping our website and learning on demand; and working with our regional communications hubs to create localised learning and development offers. As you will work across a number of these areas, we are looking for people with flexibility and a wide range of experience of creating and delivering learning in a range of formats, both in-person and online.

Day-to-day work in the Academy team is fun, fast-paced and creative. We’re looking for a personable, flexible individual who has a flair for conceptualising, creating and delivering great learning content. Ideally, you’ll have a blend of experience spanning learning design, content creation and management, and in-person learning delivery and facilitation. You will work closely with other members of the wider unit to continuously design, update and deliver the Academy offer, working together to ensure that our learning content is high quality, engaging and meets the needs of the GCS community.

Please note that the role will involve working with learners and users based in all regions and will require regular travel within the UK to deliver training and learner community events.

Responsibilities & Duties

As a Learning Delivery Manager, you will:

  • Work with the Academy leads and wider team to design and deliver a schedule of great learning experiences across a range of formats.
  • Deliver and facilitate Academy learning events and programmes at hub locations throughout the UK and online as required.
  • Create and curate new content and resources from a wide range of sources for the Academy website.
  • Create and manage suitable social media content advertising our learning offer on channels such as LinkedIn.
  • Work with the wider digital Products team to create and produce bite-sized learning resources, for example, videos, podcasts and thought pieces.
  • Work with a wide range of stakeholders and subject matter experts in order to access and incorporate the latest thinking into the Academy’s content on an ongoing basis.
  • Analyse learner data to monitor and evaluate the impact of the Academy’s offer across all learner groups and identify trends and behavioural patterns that the team can action to improve the offer.
  • Work flexibly with other teams in Government Communications, including the Skills and Standards, People and Membership and Applied Data and Innovation teams.
