Summary
Job Purpose
As the HR Officer, you will support the Head of People in delivering a wide range of HR services across the organisation. This hands-on role involves executing day-to-day HR operations, providing advice to employees and line managers, and contributing to the implementation of HR initiatives. You will be a key point of contact for HR-related queries, ensuring that the HR function operates efficiently and in line with company policies and UK & Ireland employment law.
This appointment serves as the first steps to building a HR team to not only support the Wilderness Group but the whole Active Travel Group which has combined revenues of over £50m and brings together a team of 120 outdoor and mountain travel professionals looking after over 25,000 customers across its six brands. Travel, whether it be skiing in the Alps, hiking the West Highland Way or cycling the vineyards of Provence is in our DNA.

Key Accountabilities
- HR Operations Management:
Ensure the smooth execution of day-to-day HR operations, including managing the employee lifecycle (recruitment, onboarding, contract administration, and offboarding) and maintaining accurate employee records in compliance with GDPR and other relevant regulations. - Employee Relations Support:
Provide first-line HR support to employees and managers, addressing HR-related queries, resolving employee relations issues, and ensuring that all actions are in line with company policies and UK & Ireland employment law. - Recruitment & Onboarding Coordination:
Assist in the recruitment process by coordinating job postings, candidate screening, and interviews, and ensure a positive onboarding experience for all new hires, working closely with hiring managers to meet the organisation's talent needs.
Key Responsibilities
HR Operations
- Manage the employee lifecycle, including recruitment, onboarding, contract administration, and offboarding processes.
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date employee records, ensuring compliance with GDPR and other relevant legislation.
- Administer employee benefits and ensure timely communication of benefits information to employees.
Employee Relations
- Provide first-line HR support and guidance to employees and managers on HR policies, procedures, and employment law.
- Assist in resolving employee relations issues, such as grievances and disciplinary matters, in accordance with company policy and UK employment law.
- Support the Head of People in managing complex employee relations cases.
Recruitment & Onboarding
- Assist with the recruitment process, including drafting job descriptions, posting job adverts, screening candidates, and coordinating interviews.
- Support hiring manager with coordination and conducting new employee inductions and ensure a smooth onboarding experience for all new hires.
- Collaborate with hiring managers to understand recruitment needs and timelines.
- Provide input to help streamline systems, processes & procedures to drive efficiency and shorten recruitment lifecycle
HR Policy & Compliance
- Ensure that all HR policies and procedures are up to date and in line with current legislation.
- Assist in the development and implementation of HR policies that promote a positive workplace culture.
- Support compliance with health and safety regulations, including managing risk assessments and workplace safety initiatives.
Learning & Development
- Support with learning and development activities, including booking training sessions and tracking employee participation.
- Assist in identifying training needs and opportunities for employee development.
- Support the Head of People in implementing talent development programmes.
Payroll & Compensation
- Liaise with the finance team to ensure accurate payroll processing, including managing employee data changes, holiday pay, and other related tasks.
- Support the administration of compensation reviews and salary benchmarking exercises.
HR Reporting & Analytics
- Prepare and analyse HR metrics and reports to support decision-making and track key HR indicators such as turnover, absenteeism, and employee engagement.
- Provide regular updates to the Head of People on HR activities and trends within the organisation.
