Summary


We are looking to appoint a Consultant Practitioner Psychologist to lead and manage the delivery of psychological care and therapy within HIV services based at North Middlesex University Hospital (NMUH). To provide psychological representation, guidance and advice to the specialty leaders at NMUH, in discussion with and guidance from Royal Free London NHS Foundation Trust (RFL) Leads for Psychological Professions. To lead on service development as directed by the Royal Free London NHS Foundation Trust (RFL) Leads for Psychological Professions. To work as a senior clinician providing an advanced highly specialist psychological assessment, including neuro-cognitive assessment, and treatment service for patients with HIV and their valued others at NMUH. To provide clinical and operational leadership, clinical supervision, line management and professional line management to a range of psychological specialists and allied staff within NMUH HIV specialty, and other psychological specialties as directed by RFL Leads for Psychological Professions. To provide consultation, training and clinical supervision to HIV care staff at NMUH, and being a resource for senior managers, and clinical teams concerning psychological aspects of patient care and management along patient pathways, including aspects of adjustment to physical ill health; adherence to medical regimes and treatments; behaviour change; organisation and multidisciplinary team dynamics; and aspects of organisational change.

To lead and manage the delivery of psychological care of those under the care of HIV services of NMUH. To work autonomously as a senior clinician within the NMUH HIV services, providing an advanced, highly specialist clinical psychology service. Formulate plans for the formal psychological treatment and/or management of a client’s mental health/clinical health psychological problems based upon an appropriate conceptual framework of the client’s physical and mental health issues, and employing methods based upon evidence of efficacy. Make highly skilled evaluations and decisions about treatment options considering both theoretical and therapeutic models and highly complex factors concerning historical and developmental, socio-economic and cultural processes that have shaped the individual. To employ a broad theoretical knowledge base to analyse, interpret and compare complex information in order to develop a specialist understanding and to design specialised programmes of care tailored to individual need. To exercise full responsibility and autonomy for the treatment of clients whose problems are managed as a psychologically based standard care plan, ensuring appropriate assessment, formulation and interventions, communicating with the referral agent and others involved with the care on a regular basis.

NMUH North Middlesex University Hospital NHS Hospital Trust (NMUH) is one of London’s busiest healthcare providers, providing hospital care and community services for the 350,000 people living in Enfield, Haringey and beyond. Our specialist services include HIV, cardiology, blood disorders, diabetes, fertility, sickle cell and thalassemia. In addition to a full range of cancer diagnosis and treatment services, the Helen Rollason Cancer Support Centre is based on-site and provides services to support cancer patients’ wellbeing. We also provide community services and have a dedicated 0-19 service for children and young people in Enfield so that they can get the best possible start in life. To manage and co-ordinate the work of qualified, training and assistant psychologists and other psychological specialists and counsellors as appropriate. Be responsible for the personnel management of Psychological Services staff in NMUH HIV Care and other specialty as directed by RFL Lead for Psychological Professions, including ensuring up to date mandatory training in line with requirements by the Trust and professional registration body, appropriate registration with the relevant professional body, managing appraisals and staff absence (e.g., sickness, annual leave) through appropriate record-keeping, electronic data entry, and liaison with relevant support teams if necessary (e.g., Workforce). To manage staff recruitment and selection, and strive to develop staffing resources where indicated, in line with service needs. Make known and act on any deficiency in working conditions, equipment and procedures which may constitute a hazard to patients or staff and ensure risk assessments are undertaken and adequate precautions are set up. To participate fully and implement Trust and local policies concerning both clinical and research governance.

To provide leadership at NMUH site for psychosocial care in HIV care and other specialty as directed by RFL Leads for Psychological Professions, working collaboratively with colleagues to ensure that services are fully aligned and effective, including identifying and proposing potential changes to working practices and procedures. Regularly critically review the psychological service provided to patients with HIV and ensure that systems are in place to monitor the quality and productivity of service delivery, providing reports concerning the functioning of the service, outcomes and patient feedback. Be proactive and innovative in identifying opportunities for cost effective service improvement and development whilst maintaining best patient care, and redesign where appropriate, in collaboration with other senior staff. Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the political, social and economic factors affecting service delivery. To co-ordinate and chair regular service meetings, including planning and organising journal club presentations, and updating staff members on service-related issues. To attend on a regular basis, directorate meetings as a representative for the psychological service, including speciality care group, clinical practice groups and clinical governance meetings as agreed with the RFL Leads for Psychological Professions. To maintain up to date knowledge of legislation, national and local policies, and issues of relevance to the service and patient group and ensure the psychological therapies and counselling staff adhere to these. To support the specialty multi-disciplinary teams to deliver integrated care, encompassing physical and psychological well-being. To work with the RFL Leads for Psychological Professions and other consultant psychologists to support long-term strategic plans for the development and delivery of Specialist Psychological Care within the Royal Free London NHS Trust. To undertake such other duties and responsibilities appropriate to the grade of Consultant Psychologist as direct by the RFL Lead for Psychological Professions. To contribute to the long-term strategic plans for the development and delivery of HIV Psychological Services within the Trust Psychological Services.
