Summary

Job Purpose and Dimensions Managerially and professionally accountable to the Head of Nursing the Deputy Head of Nursing has responsibility for the leadership and management of nursing and midwifery across the Clinical Service Unit (CSU). This includes line management responsibilities within the CSU and the management of specific clinical services/areas. They will work to support the Head of Nursing for all issues relating to nursing within the CSU and will be an integral part of the senior nurse structure within the CSU. They are responsible for decision making where practice or service delivery issues arise within the CSU or cross speciality or when cross speciality leadership is required. The Deputy Head of Nursing will establish and foster an effective working relationship with the CSU Management team to lead improvements in nursing, service delivery and the achievement of organisational priorities within the CSU. The Deputy Head of Nursing will deputise for the Head of Nursing on an as required basis. The Deputy Head of Nursing has responsibility for the delivery of safe, clinically and cost effective and compassionate nursing/midwifery care within the CSU and provides assurance evidence to the Head of Nursing, Nurse Director (Operations)/Deputy Chief Nurse and Chief Nurse/Chief Operating Officer regarding compliance against all appropriate professional, organisational and national compliance standards. The Deputy Head of Nursing (Band 8b) will be responsible for the care and professional practice delivered within a large CSU. This would equate to a nursing workforce of between approximately 600 whole time equivalent staff. The role of the Deputy Head of Nursing will include the requirement to engage with partners outside of the organisation e.g. to collaborate in city-wide and national improvement projects and developing relationships with service users. Services provided within the CSU have a significant regional role in providing healthcare and this is represented in the requirement for a Deputy Head of Nursing post-holder to allow the Head of Nursing to liaise regionally and align service provision at a strategic level.
