Summary

With respect to both the cervical screening and the diagnostic cytology sections of Cytology, the post-holder will, 1. Participate in all aspects of Cytopathology and other areas of Pathology to attain Registration with HPC. 2. Complete the Registration Portfolio leading to registration with the HPC and enter into a programme of training to acquire the Certificate in Cervical Cytology. 3. Fully participate in all aspects of the training programme. This may include periods of private study outside normal working hours. 4. Assist with the reception, preparation and documentation of specimens for Cytology 5. Participate in data input to laboratory computer 6. Assist in the specimen processing and the production Cytology preparations for microscopic examination. 7. Assist in the production of reports and the maintenance of departmental records 8. Prepare staining solutions and reagents and assist in the maintenance of adequate stocks of reagents and consumables. 9. Be responsible for the day-to-day maintenance of the equipment with which he/she is working. Assist in the maintenance of all laboratory equipment. 10. Participate in risk management of the department including error reporting and corrective actions 11. Participate in internal quality control and external quality assurance procedures 12. Be responsible for organising allocated work 13. Ensure that the exchange of information is accurate at all times, through competent verbal and written skills. 14. Notify senior staff of all problems encountered in the performance of duties. 15. Work according to Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) developed for use in the department. Assist in the development and review of those SOPs as required. 16. Ensure that a high level of personal competence and professionalism is maintained through continual personal development 17. Work according to the regulations and codes of practice governing aspects of Health and Safety relevant to the department. 18. Participate in the Trusts personnel development programme, which includes regular performance review and annual appraisal.
