Summary
JOB PURPOSE Undertake defined technical and administrative tasks to assist in the delivery of a safe, effective and efficient service provided by HMDS. Specific duties depend on the section in which the member of staff is working Reporting to and being supervised and directed by scientists in the department. Collaborating with other members of the section, department or hospital to help achieve an effective and reliable service. 3. JOB DIMENSIONS The post holder will undertake the scientific duties and responsibilities of a technical support worker in the provision of an effective and high quality service to patients. He/She will be expected to work with a degree of autonomy for patient testing within the overall responsibility of the Service Manager, Head of Department and section leads. He/She will participate in continuing training to acquire, improve and apply the requisite skills and expertise for the post and also aid senior biomedical scientists and clinical scientists in the training and supervision of new staff members. The postholder will be required to work in different sections of the laboratory by rotation and may be required to take special responsibility for specialised areas of work or nominated departmental duties. Specific duties will depend on the section to which the postholder is allocated. 5. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED Must hold a degree in biomedical / biological sciences or other equivalent qualification. Have knowledge and understanding of basic clinical biochemistry / immunology including established and emerging techniques for the measurement of clinically important analytes. You will develop your competencies, skills and knowledge in the speciality in which you are working through practical experience, in house training and attendance at any courses deemed necessary by the laboratory in order to carry out your duties. Basic computer skills are essential to carry out this post. To have a knowledge of the departmental test repertoire, analytical methods, quality assurance and problem solving. To have a knowledge of departmental structure policies and procedures. 6. PRINCIPAL DUTIES & AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY Clinical Governance To undertake training and development to ensure safe delivery of assigned tasks. To follow written protocols and be subject to supervision To participate in the risk management of the department, including error reporting and investigation. To participate in the general care of the department including its equipment To participate in internal and external quality control procedures Clerical To receive samples, sort, data entry to laboratory records including computer databases. To label patient samples and related documents accurately To follow laboratory protocols To file paper records Education and Development To maintain and improve competence, knowledge and skills. To participate in annual appraisal. To comply any future HPC requirements within this grade Clinical and laboratory tasks (following written laboratory protocols) To carry out biochemical analysis and to prepare written reports under the direct supervision of registered Clinical Scientists and Biomedical Scientists. Calibration and maintenance of equipment To aid Clinical Scientists and Biomedical Scientists in the training and supervision of new staff. Maintain a high level of accuracy and reliability in defined routine, preparative and associated procedures. To receive and check deliveries to the department including chemicals and equipment; ensuring the appropriate storage To monitor stock and organise the storage areas. To carry out procedures for cleaning and disinfection of laboratory areas and apparatus To monitor designated items of equipment and to report any faults to the designated Biomedical Scientist. To dispose of laboratory clinical, chemical and other hazardous waste materials according to protocols To receive samples for analysis and processing according to departmental procedures To despatch specimens to other sites or departments, together with appropriate documentation To monitor and direct the work of Biomedical Support Workers, MTOs and other staff as directed by the Section Leader To work with a degree of autonomy where required To assist in departmental research and development and clinical trials where required Health and Safety/Risk Management All staff are responsible for working with their colleagues to maintain and improve the quality of services provided to our patients and other service users. This includes complying at all times with the Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust Policies, including Health and Safety policies, in particular by following agreed safe working procedures, and reporting incidents using the Trust Incident Reporting system. Infection Control The jobholder must comply at all times with the Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust Infection Control policies, in particular by practising Universal Infection Control Precautions. Hand hygiene must be performed before and after contact with patients and their environment.
