Summary
This placement provides the opportunity to spend a full year immersed in a particular garden department, studying a specific group of plants, garden practice or style. You will gain knowledge, experience, skills and training in your specialism, in a work-based context, to prepare you for professional life in the industry.
Working with the Garden Support Services team, you will gain a variety of horticultural skills that are essential to the operation of a garden and wider estate.
Tasks will include seasonal grass maintenance on lawns and meadows across the garden. You will carry out lawn repair, scarification and aeration, over seeding and turfing. Throughout the spring and summer, you will be cutting fine lawns and amenity lawns and assisting with the management of our wide variety of meadows and grassland on site. You will experience the use of both ride on and pedestrian lawn mowers and learn our unique skill of turf art.
Other additional skills the team will be carrying out include hard landscaping work, where we currently undertake in-house projects and tasks such as fencing, paving and installation of drainage features, as well as general repair works across the whole site, such as wall repairs and pointing.
During your time with the team, you will also learn how we manage green waste on site, which includes making our own compost.
During the placement you will complete horticultural research culminating in a project write up and submission for the RHS Level 3 Award in Horticultural Investigation (funded by the RHS). In order to achieve the qualification, you will also be required to attend several online sessions (either live or recordings) over a period of 9 months and complete a professional discussion.

The RHS is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children, young people and adults at risk and expects all personnel to share in this commitment. We are an inclusive employer and welcome applicants from all backgrounds.
