Summary
About the Placement:
Are you enthusiastic about horticulture? Have you already completed (or are studying for) a Level 2 horticultural theory qualification and have at least 3 months practical experience? Are you interested in specialising and completing a Level 3 Award to further your career?
Our Professional Work Placement programme is a one-year paid work experience placement for horticulturists who wish to specialise. Applicants should have already completed (or be studying for) a Level 2 Horticultural theory qualification or apprenticeship standard and have 3 months (minimum) practical experience in the industry at application.
The placement provides the opportunity to spend a full year immersed in a particular garden department, studying a specific group of plants, garden practice or style whilst completing a Level 3 Award. You will gain knowledge, experience, skills and training in your specialism, in a work-based context, to prepare you for professional life in the industry.
Speciality focus: The Edibles and Productive Horticulture PWP at Rosemoor is for anyone looking to expand and specialise their knowledge in the production of edible crops in a garden setting. Annually the edibles team cultivate over 500 different varieties of fruit and vegetables, using modern and traditional techniques.
Who will you be working with: You will work alongside the small specialist edibles team at Rosemoor. You will shadow and learn from the team across a broad spectrum of food production areas and techniques, enabling you to see a full growing year in the world of edibles at Rosemoor, as well as having opportunities to work with colleagues across the RHS.
Where will you be working: Nestled in a wooded valley in the heart of North Devon is the nationally acclaimed RHS Garden Rosemoor. Set across 65 acres, the site encompasses two very contrasting ornamental gardens as well as a fruit and vegetable garden, which is surrounded by woodland.
The successful candidate will spend their time working in the renowned fruit and vegetable garden at Rosemoor, and our two Orchards, which include varieties for growing in the Southwest as well as our Devon Heritage Orchard, which holds a National Collection of Devon apples. Time will also be spent working in the Potager, and teaching gardens home to our Award of Garden Merit (AGM) trials and forest garden.
The fruit and vegetable garden at Rosemoor grows productive plants from all over the world and demonstrates both traditional and modern techniques to its visitors. The edible produce is used by our chefs to supply the on-site restaurant and cafes, as well as to make Rosemoor juices, chutneys and jams for our shop.
The garden holds a wide collection of soft and top fruit grown in a range of trained and traditional forms including a collection of over 150 apple varieties. The edible forest garden is also an interesting feature as it exhibits an alternative method of growing edible plants in a sustainable way. The Edible team at Rosemoor also deliver Award of Garden Merit (AGM) trials, feeding into the wider RHS trials program, alongside a variety of adult learning courses and they get involved in the many events held within the garden celebrating the crops they grow.
About the RHS Level 3 Award:
During the placement you will complete horticultural research and writing culminating in achieving an RHS Level 3 Award in Horticultural Investigation (funded by the RHS). Candidates completing the Level 3 qualification will be allocated a Project Supervisor who will support you and advise on the project write up. In order to achieve the qualification, you will be required to attend several online sessions (either live or recordings) over a period of 9 months, submit a project write up and complete a professional discussion.
