Summary

This role is for a Case Worker position in the Home Office’s Warrantry team, performing one of the most critical and important national security functions in the Home Office, considering applications from the Security Service and Law Enforcement agencies for warrants to authorise the use of intrusive investigative techniques. It is a high-profile, fast-paced and a 24/7 operational team.
This role would suit someone with a desire to work as part of a team to deliver national security outcomes, and to work across the full scope of national security subject matter.
As a caseworker, your role will be to examine applications from various agencies for use of these powers, and consider the intelligence, necessity, and proportionality cases, before developing supporting briefing for the Secretary of State. This is a vital role in ensuring the delivery of operational national security outcomes.
The Case Worker’s core role is to consider applications from the Security Service and Law Enforcement agencies for warrants to authorise the use of intrusive investigative techniques, and to prepare and deliver advice for the Home Secretary.
This role represents a unique opportunity to work in the world of intelligence, national security, and law enforcement, and to carry out some of the most operationally important and sensitive casework in the national security environment. Every week you will work on cases that have a material impact on the security of the UK, and at times you will be responsible for working on issues that are at the top of the Government’s agenda. It is not unusual to hear your cases being discussed on the news and at times our work is closely scrutinised by the courts, Parliament, and the public.
Key Responsibilities
- Considering a range of sensitive casework applications, conducting due diligence in all cases and providing challenge to the respective agencies where appropriate.
- Drafting high quality advice at pace for the Secretary of State on highly sensitive and often complex casework applications.
- Liaising with Senior Officials and Private Office to ensure that the operational warrantry process runs smoothly.
- Maintaining excellent relationships with the respective agencies and IPCO and ensuring a smooth flow of information between all parties.
- Operating in a secure environment with the utmost respect and care for the sensitivity of the information you will handle.
- Participating in an Out of Hours on all function for the most urgent cases, and participating in the team’s shift system.
- There is potential for a successful candidate to take on a data protection practitioner role, and assist the Head of Team in developing new a new data governance framework.
The Warranty team operate a shift system (the office is staffed 07:00 to 19:00) and a 24/7 on call system for urgent cases out of hours, and the post-holder will be expected to participate in these on rotation. Some flexibility around hours may also be required at times of high operational demand. The role includes a 12.5% Shift Disturbance Allowance (SDA).
Given the sensitive nature of the work that the team does, applicants must hold or be prepared to obtain DV clearance. Successful candidates will also be subject to additional checks which need to be completed prior to formal offers of employment.
Training:
Full training on casework decision-making, as well as mentoring from experienced staff, is provided.
Allowances
Successful candidate will be eligible for 12.5% Shift Disturbance Allowance (SDA) on completion of initial training.
Working Patterns:
The nature of the role means that the post holder will need to be based in 2 Marsham Street 100% of the time. Working from home would only be available on an ad hoc, exceptional basis. This role is available on a full-time basis.
