Summary

Decision Making and Appeals (DMA) is a team of experts that provides specialised services to ensure that Social Security Benefits and Child Maintenance operate in compliance with the legislation, whilst effectively reflecting their intended policies.

The team is responsible for all DWP appeals to the Upper Tribunal and the higher courts, it drafts and publishes legal guidance in the Decision Makers Guide (DMG), Child Maintenance Decision Makers Guide (CMDMG) and Advice for Decision Making (ADM). Further support is provided by way of a complex case guidance service for front line decision makers.

You will work as part of a small highly skilled team, responsible for managing the delivery of your own work, adapting and responding to changing priorities as needed.

General role responsibilities

As part of your day to day role you will:

  • Produce high quality, technically accurate written appeal applications and submissions to His Majesty’s Courts and Tribunal Service (HMCTS).
  • Utilise expertise to draft case specific legal guidance for operational colleagues
  • Co-ordinate with stakeholders to quality assure a range of learning and development products for DMA Leeds and operational colleagues
  • Build positive relationships with team members and stakeholders to identify & manage litigation risk and determine the appropriate response for complex cases
  • Ensure that team records, Excel spreadsheets and other reporting mechanisms are accurately maintained
