Summary
Evidence-Based Practice (EBP) is a national team that aims to support all parts of HMPPS apply evidence into everyday practice to achieve better outcomes for all. We contribute by championing evidence-based practice at every level, integrating the best scientific evidence with the operational perspective and the voice of colleagues, our partners and those in our care; supporting the design and delivery of high-quality services which reflect the goals of the organisation and the interests, values, and needs of all the people with whom we work.
The team is part of the Evidence and Insights function that supports HMPPS to access and apply the latest research, evidence and data; share good practice and innovation; connect people across the Criminal Justice System; and celebrate success.
In the Evidence-Based Practice Team we:
• translate and disseminate the latest and highest quality research on topics relevant to our practice across HMPPS,
• address priority evidence gaps to broaden our understanding and enable effective service provision through original research and other project work,
• work collaboratively with colleagues to integrate evidence into HMPPS policy, strategy and practice drawing on high quality evidence and behaviour science insights on implementing sustained positive change,
• aim to help colleagues feel more capable and confident in using data and evidence to enhance our practice and inform appraisal of our progress,
• provide advice on evidence strategies and planning proportionate learning that is timely, feasible and enhances our decision making at every level.
Ongoing projects include culture change, procedural justice, staff wellbeing and development, use of force, psychosocial maturity, implementation science and understanding what works in achieving safe and rehabilitative outcomes in prison and probation settings.
We are looking for experienced, values-driven colleagues to join our team as evidence leads.
Two of these Band 9 posts will be joining EBP to take forward our wide evidence agenda and lead on priority projects. There is a high level of demand for our support from colleagues in every corner of the agency and lots of opportunity to apply your strengths and existing knowledge while enjoying the challenge of new topic areas or taking up new strands of evidence-based practice in action. In EBP, you will have an endlessly interesting and rewarding role to play, alongside committed colleagues keen to support you.
Two further posts will be dedicated to providing evidence support to national teams leading on specific programmes of work:
• One post will support the HMPPS Enable programme which is an exciting new workforce transformation programme for prisons. It will deliver a series of workforce changes and introduce a relationship-based working model that can be scaled across prisons over time.
• One post will lead the evidence support for the HMPPS Professional Standards & Behaviour Group taking forward work relating to climate assessment; behavioural interventions and practical support for creating a positive workplace; and the work of the disparities unit on reducing disproportionate outcomes for all.
