Did you know that many people may recover from their drug or alcohol dependence only to die prematurely because of their continued and untreated tobacco dependence? Evidence also indicates that people who stop smoking can also improve the outcomes of their drug and alcohol misuse treatment.
In light of this, this role has been created with OHID funding, to provide smoking cessation advice and interventions to people who are being supported by Via for problematic alcohol or drug use.
The Role
We are seeking an experienced smoking cessation advisor who is able to work flexibly and collaboratively with colleagues and people who use our drug and alcohol service.
Key aspects of the role will include:
• Supporting recovery practitioners and clinicians to understand how to Make Every Contact Count and provide Very Brief Advice to people of the drug and alcohol service who are using tobacco.
• Encourage referrals into the in-house smoking advisor based on tobacco use data.
• Run regular pop-ups in the main drug and alcohol treatment hubs to promote the service and encourage referrals.
• Work opportunistically and proactively around people’s existing appointments with Via’s Drug and Alcohol Service to help them to register and set a quit date when they are most motivated, and to collect and verify 4-week quit outcomes within the quit window, reducing numbers lost-to-follow-up.
• Deliver a group for people of the Drug and Alcohol Service who are quitting smoking.
• Work with recovery practitioners to identify people who are smoking cannabis with tobacco who could benefit from smoking cessation support.
• Work with our Young People’s service Fusion to identify which young people have tobacco or nicotine dependence (including vape and shisha) and could benefit from support.
• Complete record-keeping on Quit Manager and maintain other records as needed to evaluate outcomes.
• Support other activities of the team that promote the service and the benefits of quitting smoking.
This is an exciting opportunity to be part of an expanding service that delivers specialist advice and support and is developing key partnerships to improve the health and wellbeing of Redbridge residents.
This is a full-time position of 37.5 hours per week, on a fixed term basis for 12 months. Our usual hours are Monday to Friday from 09:00 to 17:00 with some occasional evening and weekend work as required on a rota within the team.
