Summary

Job description- phlebotomist and point of care testing (POCT) operator. Key responsibilities- Phlebotomy & general- 1-Undertake phlebotomy ward rounds on a daily basis ensuring these are completed efficiently and also to attend ward rounds across the Trust as required, following the agreed schedule, adhering to policies and standard operating procedures (SOPs) 2-Will be required to provide phlebotomy cover at the Bethlem site and other SLAM sites as and when required. 3-Collection of blood from patients attending the outpatient clinics at Maudsley and ensuring onward transport to the pathology provider without undue delay. 4-Assist with reception duties ensuring all details in our computer system are checked and updated and ensure correct labelling and packing of all specimens ready for transport by our pathology provider. 5-Attending to emails requesting phlebotomy and results from the group email in a timely manner. 6-Ensure requests for consumables are made in a timely manner to the deputy phlebotomy manager and/or phlebotomy manager. Provide assistance and training to ward staff regarding consumables ordering, sample tracking and electronic pathology ordering. 7-Undertake training and development as required in line with responsibilities of the post and Trust policy. 8-Responding appropriately to queries and issues raised by patients, SLAM staff and outside agencies. Liaise with the Head of pathology, phlebotomy and point of care testing services regarding the point of care testing (POCT) needs. 9-Deal with telephone queries from ward staff regarding phlebotomy, pathology and POCT issues passing on to appropriate line management as required. Advice to hospital staff on specimen requirements as and when requested. 10-Monitoring of stock taking of phlebotomy consumables required at Maudsley and Bethlem and ordering from the Trust and pathology provider ordering systems. 11-Monitoring of POCT consumables where applicable. 12-Assisting in the audit of various processes within the phlebotomy and POCT services 13-To perform any other duties appropriate to the nature and grade of the post. 14-To act as a point of contact for staff and patients or service user for phlebotomy issues. POCT 1-To perform point of care testing on patients under supervision of phlebotomy manager and/or deputy phlebotomy manager. 2-Provide internal quality control data prior to patient sample testing to Head of pathology, phlebotomy and point of care testing. To alert Head of pathology, phlebotomy and point of care testing of any failures and await advice before proceeding with patient testing. 3-To facilitate training and competency assessment of clinical and non-clinical staff on the POCT equipment used across the Trust. 4-To help develop and maintain governance documents to include SOPs, policies, protocol, training/competency assessment for the use of POCT. 5-Ensure that the test systems are properly functioning and maintained and cleaned and comply with daily maintenance schedules. 6-Works with physicians, nurses, employees, management to ensure POCT equipment/testing is running effectively and efficiently. 7-Travel to each site when required to address POCT matters. 8-In coordination with the head of department, enable the service to be ready for assessment by UKAS to BS EN ISO 15189:2022 standards. 9-Co-ordinate IQC and EQA and be responsible for adding the information to the Trust database. 10-To maintain adequate stock of POCT devices/tests to ensure adequate provision to the Trust 11-Assist with purchasing functions (interact with purchasing, external companies, research providers) 12-Under the coordination of the Head of service, help facilitate research evaluations of new technologies.
