Clinical Function Perform the role of the emergency nurse, delivering care as directed by senior colleagues. Participate in planning, initiating and evaluating nursing care. Work with all disciplines for the total care of patients. Maintain effective communication with patients, their relatives and other relevant agencies. Support patients, relatives and carers in instances of extreme stress or bereavement with the supervision of senior colleagues. Maintain patient confidentiality at all times. Continue the development of advanced skills within the framework of the departmental policies. Provide care to patients accessing the Urgent Care Centre, including assessment for analgesia, requesting x-rays for minor injuries, and organizing the transfer of patients from the UCC facility. To adhere to safeguarding policies and procedures, ensuring the protection of vulnerable adults has a high profile. Will undertake further initial assessment of patients who are waiting to be seen by GPs or ANPs e.g. analgesia; first aid and requesting x-rays. Monitor welfare of patients in the various UCC streams to ensure they are comfortable and aware of waiting times. Liaise with both streamers in drawing patients into the various UCC streams. Will liaise with GP, ENP & F2 in coordinating the transfer of referred patients to their correct destination e.g. AAU. Will liaise with GP, ENP & F2 in coordinating the review of patients who require specialist review in the UCC or EOU e.g. Plastics, rapid response. Will support UCC staff in the delivery of post-assessment treatments e.g. wound care; plastering and discharge follow-up advice. Management Function Form and develop leadership skills. Ensure safe custody, administration and maintenance of drugs in accordance with district policy and law. Manage a safe clinical environment within the Health and Safety at Work act. Have knowledge of the role within policies and procedures relating to fire, bomb alert, major accident, cardiac arrest. Carry out procedures within hospital guidelines and ensure these are adhered to. Manage and maintain resources within the clinical area (equipment and supplies). Manage incidents within hospital policy and procedure. Communicate information on nursing activity and related matters, and report as appropriate. Take responsibility for special projects as discussed with senior nurse. Demonstrate good documentation skills. Teaching Function Assist with teaching programme for learners and qualified staff within the clinical area. Aid professional development of the nursing team. Practice role as health educator. Develop mentoring responsibility for learner nurses in the Emergency Department & Urgent Care Centre. Professional Development Develop advanced clinical skills and expertise in emergency nursing. Remain up to date with clinical and professional developments in nursing, and attend relevant study sessions as appropriate. Participate in the planning and implementing of new ideas. Develop management and leadership skills with a view to promotion. Participate in regular appraisal. Participate in clinical supervision. Work within the NMC Code of Professional Conduct. Communication Ensure all communication, which may be complex, contentious or sensitive, is undertaken in a responsive and inclusive manner, focusing on improvement and ways to move forward. Ensure all communication is presented appropriately to the different recipients, according to levels of understanding, type of communication being imparted and possible barriers such as language, culture, understanding or physical or mental health conditions. General Covid-19 vaccination is a condition of employment for this role, unless an exemption applies.
