Summary

Job Purpose:
The Waking Night Residential Support Worker is responsible for providing overnight care and support to children and young people in a residential setting. The role requires a dedicated and compassionate individual to ensure the safety, well-being, and comfort of the children during the night. In addition to providing support, the position involves light cleaning duties to ensure the home remains safe and hygienic. You will be expected to be alert, responsive, and available to address the needs of the children during the night shift.

Key Responsibilities:

Overnight Support and Monitoring:

Provide a safe and secure environment for children and young people during the night, ensuring their well-being.
Monitor and assist with any nighttime routines, including helping with settling children to bed and responding to any nighttime concerns or disturbances.
Be alert and available to address any emergencies or incidents that may occur during the night, following appropriate protocols.
Maintain regular checks on the children, ensuring they are comfortable, safe, and secure throughout the night.

Supporting Children’s Needs:

Offer emotional and practical support as required, including reassuring children, assisting with any night time anxieties, or attending to any specific needs as outlined in care plans.
Support children with any night-time routines, such as getting up for bathroom visits or changing bed linens if necessary.
Respond to any immediate or urgent needs of the children, including providing medication or ensuring they are following their care plans.

Cleaning and Housekeeping Duties:

Carry out light cleaning duties throughout the night to ensure the home is clean, safe, and well-maintained. This may include:
Cleaning and tidying communal areas (living room, kitchen, dining room, hallways).
Ensuring bedrooms are tidy and well-organized (including changing bed linens if required).
Cleaning and sanitizing bathrooms, ensuring they are stocked with necessary supplies (toilet paper, soap, etc.).
Ensuring that any shared spaces are free of hazards, including sweeping, mopping, and disinfecting as needed.
Ensure all cleaning tasks are completed in accordance with the home’s hygiene and safety standards.

Record-Keeping and Reporting:

Maintain accurate and up-to-date records of the children’s behavior, health, and any incidents or concerns that arise during the night.
Complete necessary handovers to the day team, ensuring they are aware of any important information or incidents from the night shift.
Report any significant changes in the children’s behavior or health, and escalate issues to the appropriate team members or management when necessary.

Health and Safety:

Adhere to all health and safety protocols to ensure the well-being of both children and staff.
Ensure the home is secure and that all safety checks (e.g., doors locked, smoke alarms working) are completed.
Ensure that any safety hazards, including trip hazards or unsafe areas, are addressed immediately.

Team Collaboration:

Work closely with the daytime team, providing feedback and updates on the children’s needs and any important overnight developments.
Follow care plans and work collaboratively with the team to ensure continuity of care for the children.

Personal Development:

Participate in ongoing training and professional development opportunities.
Adhere to any policies, procedures, and guidelines set out by the organization.
Maintain a high standard of professional conduct at all times, ensuring that you are a positive role model for the children and the team.

Key Skills & Experience:

Experience: Experience working with children or young people in a residential care setting is desirable but not essential.

Qualifications: A minimum of a Level 3 Diploma in Residential Childcare (or equivalent) is preferred or a willingness to work towards it.

Knowledge: Basic understanding of child safeguarding, child development, and the needs of children in care.

Skills: Strong communication skills and the ability to work well as part of a team. Good organizational and time management skills.

Personal Attributes: Compassionate, patient, and understanding. Able to remain alert and responsive during night shifts. Committed to promoting the welfare and development of children and young people.

Other Requirements: A valid driving license (preferred but not essential). Ability to work independently and responsibly during night shifts. Ability to work flexible hours, including weekends and holidays.
