Summary

Temporary position for 2 years

Working in Burnley’s award-winning parks and open spaces under the instruction of trainers and qualified arborists, you will gain skills and knowledge in tree felling, pruning, working at height, tree planting and maintenance. You will also be given training in the full range of machinery that is operated by the tree team including chain saws, chippers, access platforms, stump grinders and hand tools. You will have opportunities to work on trees in parks and open spaces, woodland, highways and in private gardens.

In partnership with Myerscough College, you will complete training assignments and maintain a student portfolio, which will be assessed each month by a trainer, leading to the award of an NVQ (level 2) in Arboriculture.

We are looking for self-motivated people who aspire to develop themselves and are committed to learning. You will need a good school, college or work record of attendance, good communication skills and GSCEs in Maths and English at Grade E/2 or above. You must also be physically fit and willing to undertake strenuous work outdoors in all weather conditions and be able to work well as part of a small team.

As part of the assessment for this role you will undergo tests on your ability to undertake manual work, demonstrate your ability to deal with heights by climbing a tree (roped up and under supervision). You will also be tested on your ability to learn manual skills and undertake basic arithmetic calculations.
