Do you have practical experience of working in an engineering workshop environment?

Have you got knowledge of Health and Safety?

If so, we’d love to hear from you!

The Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB) is part of the Department for Transport. Our purpose is to improve aviation safety by determining the circumstances and causes of air accidents and serious incidents and promoting action to prevent recurrence. We investigate accidents and serious incidents to civil aircraft in the UK (including UK Overseas Territories and Crown Dependencies) and overseas where there is a UK interest.

Working within the Engineering Support Section, the Engineering Support Technician will be primarily responsible to the Head of Health & Safety and Engineering Support to provide engineering support, both at the AAIB facilities and at aircraft accident sites.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Deploying to accident sites to work as an integral part of our investigation team. The accident site work includes assessing hazards, managing site risks and managing the wreckage recovery process including the cutting, logging and transportation of aircraft wreckage.
  • You will be required to build and maintain relationships with external stakeholders including regional fires services, specialist fire services, Ministry of Defence recovery agencies (land and sea), loss adjusters, recovery contractors, Air Ambulance operators and Ambulance Hazardous Area Response Teams.

  • Work closely in support of Engineering Inspectors, often on specialist tasks that require a patient and methodical, and often non-standard approach. You will also assist in the maintenance and up-keep of the AAIB’s technical facilities, as well as ensuring there is adequate specialist deployment equipment suitable for use.
