Summary
DUTIES OF POST This is an 8 PA neonatal consultant post. The post only provides acute neonatal cover, there is a separate general paediatric service on site at tier 1-3 levels. The timetable will change from time to time in consultation with all consultants, dependent upon the changing needs of the Trust and subject to formal annual job plan review. It is anticipated that there will be a change in terms of attending responsibilities with the potential expansion in consultant establishment. This will also be linked to regular performance review and appraisal cycle with view to identifying continuing professional development needs. ON CALL DUTIES The postholder is required to be on call out of hours for the neonatal service (can be covered from home with availability on site in case of an emergency within 30 minutes). It is possible to arrange night accommodation if this requirement cannot be met. Saturday and Sunday on-call is on-site from 09:00-15:00, during which time it is expected that the on-call consultant will do a full ward round each day. It is usual for the on-call weekend to follow on directly from an attending week. CLINICAL DUTIES Attending system: 2 weeks in 8 The new postholder will have NICU and SCBU attending consultant duties. The NICU attending consultant is responsible for the clinical management of all admissions and in-patients on the NICU, supervising junior doctors, conducting daily ward rounds and handovers, bedside teaching of all trainees on NICU and regular parent communication. Ideally this consultant should have no other commitments at this time and is responsible for ensuring consultant cover if an unavoidable commitment arises. The SCBU attending consultant covers SCBU, labour ward and the postnatal wards and is available for ad hoc antenatal counselling on the fetal medicine unit. Changes in the non-attending weeks timetable can be negotiated by the successful applicants other than in attending weeks. It is not possible to take annual leave during an attending week. During non-attending weeks, time will be devoted to out-patient clinics and supporting activities. Out-patient clinics will include follow-up of infants discharged from the neonatal unit or postnatal ward and telephone hip clinics. There is scope to develop a specialised neonatal follow up clinic. Annual leave can be taken in non-attending weeks. See the attached job description for full details and a timetable.
