This exciting Occupational Therapy Apprentice role is an excellent opportunity to integrate both academic and work-based learning. On successful completion of the apprenticeship, you will attain a Level 6 Degree and be able to apply for Health and Care Professional Council (HCPC) registration.

As an Occupational Therapy Apprentice, you will fulfil a Senior Therapy Assistant clinical role, while having set days to attend university. The clinical aspect of the role will be based on the inpatient older adults, dementia friend rehabilitation unit. As part of learning on the job you will provide clinical and non-clinical support to both Occupational and Physiotherapist colleagues. You will work under their supervision and guidance of qualified staff to provide therapy interventions towards patients’ functional goals and facilitate discharge.

Clinical aspects of the role will include completing transfer and mobility practice with patients and demonstrate to patients how to use minor aids e.g. wheeled walking frame, raised toilet seat etc. You will also play a key role in facilitating discharges from the ward which will include liaising with patients, relatives, care givers and the MDT.

If successful at our interview, you will be put forward by us, to our chosen university provider to attend their interview. Your continuation within the role is determined by being accepted on to the academic course starting September 2025. During term time you will attend university once or twice a week, and you will have to be successful at academic studies and placements to pass the apprentice, in line with the university standards.

This is an exciting and challenging role, combining both study and work to become a registered OT. We are looking for someone with an understanding of OT and has the motivation and stamina to complete a three-year apprentice Level 6 Degree.

The Trust is striving for a 7-day therapy service, once established this post will be included in the 7 day rota.

Main tasks and responsibilities

Clinical

To work under the direct and indirect supervision of qualified staff in the carrying out allocated tasks for an individual or group of patients, as part of their treatment and rehabilitation programmes. Such tasks may include:
• Contacting relatives and care givers for social and past medical history information
• Practice activities of daily living tasks including wash and dress practice and kitchen task practice
• Complete onward referrals for community support and therapy
• Carrying out treatment plans on an allocated cohort of patients with mobility / transfer difficulties and to formalise treatment plans utilising a range of treatment skills.
• Teach and supervise exercise programmes to patients as directed by senior staff.
• Document as necessary in therapy records/communication sheets/ medical notes/nursing records/ IT programmes.
• To identify adverse medical conditions that would affect treatment and act appropriately.
• To work with the team towards identified goals, helping with ensuring a timely discharge from therapy.
