Colchester City Council is looking for a passionate, skilled professional to join our Planning Policy Team as we embark on an exciting journey of sustainable growth to shape the future through our Local Plan.
Following the adoption of the Local Plan for Colchester in two parts in 2021 and 2022 respectively, we are now reviewing the Plan. This is a great opportunity to join the Planning Policy Team and contribute personally to the plan review. This is a challenge to manage our valued and varied natural and historic built environment whilst seeking to deliver around 1300 homes a year coupled with similarly ambitious targets for jobs growth and new infrastructure. It is an exciting time to work for the City Council within the Planning Policy Team and an opportunity for you to make a positive contribution.
This role would suit a qualified planner or related professional with relevant experience and expertise. As a key member of the Planning Policy team, you will contribute to leading on high-profile projects, varied work areas including plan preparation and policy drafting to playing a key role in stakeholder engagement and wider consultation. The Examination in Public is anticipated in early 2026. This role also includes implementation and review of various Development Plan Documents and supporting evidence base documents, Neighbourhood Planning and providing advice on a varied range of planning applications.
Depending on your experience and level of appointment, as a key member of our friendly team, you will assist in managing areas of work and supervise team members in support roles. This will include overseeing evidence work by specialist consultants to support and inform the Local Plan. Previous experience of working in Planning Policy or Development Management and Membership of the RTPI or other relevant professional body are expected. Most importantly, a positive and solution focused attitude and a passion for securing the best outcomes for Colchester’s communities and their environment is key. Some management experience or qualifications are desirable for appointment as a Principal Officer.
