Experience and background in commercial property would be ideal although would also welcome applications from planning and procurement specialists.
We are looking for an experienced lawyer to work particularly closely with one of the partners, the Royal Borough of Kingston of Thames. Working on regeneration plans and projects and ensuring that the programme complies with the principles of good governance. As well as carrying out some transactional work yourself, you will act as an intelligent client for the retained external legal advisers and be the conduit for the work carried out by SLLP colleagues.
Key accountabilities:
Deliver high-quality, customer-focused specialist legal advice on regeneration and major property projects, including compulsory purchase orders.
Represent General Counsel at internal governance boards and advise on legal and governance aspects of schemes.
Act as Deputy Monitoring Officer and deputise for General Counsel when absent.
Review and sign off Committee reports and serve as lead legal adviser at committee or Full Council meetings.
Procure and manage external legal advisers.
Ensure cost-effective, high-quality, and solution-oriented legal advice and services.
Manage a substantial caseload of complex and sensitive legal matters, including drafting legal documents and negotiating agreements.
Prepare and handle proceedings for court, arbitration, mediation, or public inquiry, acting as advocate or instructing external representation when appropriate.
Provide advice and support to junior legal and non-legal staff.
Key requirements:
Qualified legal executive, solicitor or barrister or chartered legal executive with a background in local government and a minimum of 5 years PQE.
Excellent knowledge of relevant legislation to the service area and the decision making processes and procedures
Specific and demonstrable expertise in property, regeneration and planning law with the technical skill and knowledge to lead on it for the organisation.
Experience and background in commercial property
Good regeneration experience
Experience of leading teams and the ability to manage, inspire and motivate staff
A solid track record of providing proactive, expert, timely and authoritative legal advice and support to senior leaders and key decision-makers at the highest levels
Good communication skills, both orally and in writing and good numeracy and analytical skills
Ability to negotiate and draft complex legal agreements and deliver expert legal advice orally and in writing with a proven ability to provide practical, professional and straight forward solutions in delivering major strategic regeneration projects.
Ability to work under pressure and respond efficiently to the changing needs of the clients
