Crynodeb

The Cities and Local Growth Unit (CLGU) has an ambitious agenda in this Government, at the heart of both of its ‘parent’ Departments - Department for Business and Trade (DBT) and Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government (MHCLG). As well as supplying expert place-based analysis to MHCLG and DBT work on devolution and local growth, the Unit will have a distinct role to support delivery of the Small Business Plan and Industrial Strategy in DBT. The Unit will also continue to play an important role in supplying place-based leadership and local business intelligence for DBT in response to emergencies. As a cross-UK Unit, CLGU will also have an important role in both Departments to support local economic growth in the nations.

This role will work closely with the CLGU Deputy Head to provide leadership on CLGU’s policy responsibilities to maximise the positive impact of the Unit in both Departments – including designing the day-to-day processes and programmes that will best connect CLGU’s local intelligence and network with other key DBT teams.

Lead and coordinate CLGU’s contribution to the DBT Industrial Strategy and Small Business Plan, including:

    • Bring together DBT-owned levers to revive our high streets, and ensure they contribute appropriately to the MHCLG-led cross-Government high streets programme. This is a priority for the DBT SoS, who in his opening address to staff set out the importance of thriving high streets, which “make people feel the economy is working for them more strongly and delivering for their area.”
    • Manage the Growth Hubs network – which provides business support in every area of England – and ensure they are making the maximum contribution to the Small Business Plan.
    • Work with DBT colleagues (particularly in Exports and Investment teams) to deliver a coordinated DBT offer to UK major cities that is greater than the sum of individual teams’ contributions.
    • Bring together cross-CLGU contributions to ad hoc priorities in both Departments – including cross-UK devolution and response to emergencies – ensuring CLGU intelligence and insight is positioned to make the greatest positive impact to both Departments’ agendas.
    • Lead a team to deliver these goals whilst establishing new projects and relationships across CLGU, and contributing to building an inclusive, supportive and dynamic culture in our teams.
