We are looking for a proactive, multi-skilled technician with the ability to work across different scales of project, competing priorities and multiple stakeholders.
The Senior Technician (Stage and Fly’s) is a new role engaged to support the smooth running of the Unicorn’s busy production department.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Shows -
• Assist in leading the technical crew (core and casual staff) during fit-ups, tech weeks, and get-outs.
• Facilitate the stage elements of each production, in collaboration with the Technical Manager and Technicians, working closely with the team to support and supervise processes and projects.
• Attend production and project meetings as required, and disseminate information to the technical team to ensure all members have the required information to carry out their assigned roles and tasks.
• Attend workshop visits along with the Production Manager and/or design team as required.
• Work as show crew cover where applicable.
• Provide cover for Technicians and deputise for the Technical Manager where required.
• With support of the Technical Manager, create good working relationships with incoming designers and freelancers, producing high quality output within our budgetary parameters.
• With the Technical Manager and Production and Technical Director, ensure all projects are properly resourced in terms of staff and equipment.
General -
• Recruit, manage and supervise all casual crew and freelance staff within an annual fixed budget and schedule, as directed by the Technical Manager.
• Actively take the lead in ensuring all technical areas and working environments are kept tidy and orderly, ensuring they comply with current licensing, fire and Health & Safety requirements.
• Support the team in the preparation and set up of rehearsal and performance spaces.
• Support the Technical Manager to ensure the upkeep of stage and equipment, including record keeping, annual inspections and regular maintenance.
• Support the delivery of the organisation’s targets around sustainability and best practice including Green Book implementation.
• Support the Technical Manager in the planning, resourcing and receiving of technical aspects of external hires.
• Oversee and advise on all rigging and flying activities in line with best practice and Unicorn policies.
• Plan and carry out repairs, alterations and improvements to the performance spaces and equipment.
• Keep abreast of current technological developments, working practices and legislative requirements for the theatre.
• Undertake Health and Safety training as required including IOSHH.
• Attend staff meetings as and when required.
• Act as Fire Warden / First Aider as and when required. Full training will be provided.
• With the Technical Manager, formulate a programme of maintenance and monitor its delivery to ensure that the Unicorn’s technical equipment is maintained to the highest standard and ensure our compliance with our statutory responsibilities.
Health & Safety -
• Work closely with the Technical Manager and Technical and Production Director to contribute to, communicate and update Risk Assessments across projects, equipment and spaces.
• Support the Technical Manager on the delivery and upkeep of the Health & Safety requirements for the building and associated equipment

PERSON SPECIFICATION -
Essential
• Previous technical stage experience working in a producing theatre.
• Experience running get in, tech and get out processes and procedures.
• Experience of working closely with creative teams including designers and production managers.
• Experience of managing freelance casual staff.
• Thorough knowledge and practical experience of stage and rigging techniques.
• Experience of Counter Weight flying systems.
• Knowledge and practical experience of relevant Health & Safety regulations, and the implementation and monitoring of safe working practices including COSHH, LOLER and other related legislation.
• A flexible, proactive and solution-based approach to work, with good time management skills.
• Carpentry skills and set construction experience
• A commitment to diversity and equality of opportunity.
• A commitment to environmental sustainability and incorporating green book and sustainable practises into our production processes.
• Excellent communication skills.
• Self-motivated with a strong teamwork ethic, supporting both senior and junior colleagues.
