Summary


Guy’s and St Thomas Hospital ICU Technical Services, provides the Technical Support Service to Critical Care comprising of Adult Intensive Care Unit (one of the largest in Europe), Paediatric and Neonatal Intensive Care and High Dependency Units.

These units have a worldwide reputation for clinical excellence in tertiary care provision.

This is a unique opportunity to work in a technical department that supports all these disciplines of Critical Care. We are looking for an enthusiastic and motivated technologist to join our expanding team.

Duties will involve maintaining all medical equipment within these increasingly “high tech” areas, including teaching/training and testing, calibration of equipment, performing physiological measurements, assisting in diagnostic procedures and supporting Point of Care devices.

There will be a requirement to work nights and weekend shifts.

Successful applicants to the full senior position will have to demonstrate relevant work experience. They will have to have a degree in a relevant science subject (or equivalent experience) and have a major interest in instrumentation and technology.

Trainee applicants are welcomed from recent graduates in a Physiological science background. If necessary, training will be provided under Annex 21 with progression to the senior band 6 position after training (unless already STP registered), completion of our competency log book and a period of consolidation (1-2 years dependent on relevant experience).

If anyone is offered a training contract, you will be paid a training salary as a percentage of the top of Band 6.

Up to 12 months prior to completion of training: 75 per cent of the pay band maximum, more than one but less than two years prior to completion of training: 70 per cent of the pay band maximum.

Ward

To set up, calibrate and connect all types of patient monitoring systems.

To set up calibrate and connect metabolic monitoring equipment.

To clean, sterilise, set up, calibrate and connect all types of patient ventilator / respiratory equipment.

To perform routine maintenance/services on ventilators and respiratory equipment.

To assist in special diagnostic catheterisation procedures and performing advanced haemodynamic measurements.

To perform measurements and derived Oxygen Uptake Studies

To clean and sterilise diagnostic equipment

To be expected to provide a significant amount of fault finding and/or recommend appropriate equipment to meet the demands of a test or patient condition.

To in-service inspect and check operation of all sundry equipment within ITU. E.g. Drip counters, peristaltic pumps, volumetric pumps, syringe pumps, suction pumps heater/cooler mattresses, defibrillators etc.

To perform complicated calibrations and servicing at manufacturers prescribed intervals.

Point of Care Testing

To perform emergency analysis of pathology specimens involving disciplines of blood gas, biochemistry haematology and coagulation.

To ensure daily cleaning and Quality Control procedures and performance checks are carried out, as well as our monthly EQA process. Analyse quality control data to make sure that all results / tests are within the required specification.

To check that Hospital policies on Sample Handling/control of Infection are observed.

To take universal precautions against infection and in the instance of a notifiable Pathogen/Infections to carry out enhanced procedures.

Teaching / Training

To take part in mandatory training programmes. Basic life support, lifting handling fire lectures etc.

To participate in in-service training programs/courses for medical, nursing and junior technical staff

Ad-hoc teaching to Medical/Technical/Nursing Staff

To aid the units programme of research & development

To supervise STP trainees and those on rotation from other specialties when if required.

General

To aid senior technicians in maintaining & troubleshooting activities / checking adequate stock levels of ALL ward and laboratory related disposables.

To uphold all relevant Trust polices and procedures to include Health & safety, Manual Handling, Fire, Infection Control and Basic Life Support.

To take part in patient transfer within the institution to MRI, CT etc.

Takes part in extra duty rotas (nights / weekends)

Flexible approach and must be adaptable to think in a proactive manner, and under stressful situations.
