Working in the renal and transplant service to provide cover of clinical duties including care of inpatients with kidney disease, general nephrology and specialist out-patients. There are three posts available, and these differ slightly, applicants are invited to review the indicative jobs plans in the job description and discussions will follow with shortlisted candidates regarding any preferences or areas of interest.

It's an exciting time to join the team at Leicester Hospitals. In July 2024 the haemodialysis service celebrated 50 years and in March 2025 our transplant service will reach that milestone. We are on track to deliver 138 kidney transplants this financial year and plan to do more. We have recently opened the Leicester South Dialysis Unit; a modern facility, with state-of-the-art technology and equipment and one of the largest dialysis units in the UK. Working with system partners we have recently secured recurrent funding for the LLR Integrated Chronic Kidney Disease Integrated care delivery project (LUCID) and this will allow the service to continue to work with 15 primary care networks (PCN's) and expand to include all PCN's in Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland.

The John Walls Renal Unit has a track record of innovative service delivery and of excellence in training and clinical research. We offer a comprehensive range of nephrology services for the population of the East Midlands Renal Network. These services include - acute and chronic haemodialysis, CAPD, home haemodialysis, outpatient nephrology and pre and post kidney transplant follow up. These are great opportunities for doctors fully trained in nephrology to be part of a committed and supportive senior medical team comprising 6 consultant Nephrologists and 5 transplant surgeons.

The overriding purpose is to support the provision of highest quality patient care through personal actions and continuous improvement.Responsibility for the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of illness, and the proper functioning of the department; Cover for colleagues' annual leave and other authorised absences; To participate in service development and business planning in collaboration with the other Consultants in the department, the CMG and local GPs and commissioners within the local CCGs; Professional supervision and management of junior medical staff including the observance of local employment and human resource policies and procedures; Responsibilities for carrying out teaching, examination and accreditation duties as required and contributing to undergraduate, postgraduate and continuing medical education activity, locally and nationally; Participating in medical audit, the Trust’s Clinical Governance processes and in CPD – CPD is provided in job plans and attendance at audit and other governance meetings is mandatory; Managerial, including budgetary responsibilities where appropriate and compliance with standing orders and standing financial instructions of the Trust.; In line with GMC Good Medical Practice it is the responsibility of the post-holder to ensure that all duties are carried out to the highest possible standard,

Our new strategy, developed with the support and feedback of colleagues, patients, and partners, is our compass for the next seven years (2023-2030).

We have four primary goals:
• high-quality care for all,
• being a great place to work,
• partnerships for impact, and
• research and education excellence

And we will embed health equality in all we do - taking active steps to reduce the avoidable differences in healthcare that some people face, working in partnership with communities.

Our strategy is underpinned by new values and we will work to ensure they are an everyday reality for all:
• we are compassionate,
• we are proud,
• we are inclusive, and
• we are one team

This is an exciting moment as we look to the future with clarity on what we already do well and where we need to focus our energies to make an even bigger difference for the people we serve.

The job plan will vary from month to month with in-patient care of both general Nephrology wards based at the Glenfield Site in rotation with other consultants. The job plan will be subject to annual review, with any revisions sought by mutual agreement but it is expected that the successful candidate will work with the clinical management team to ensure that services are delivered efficiently and reflect best practice with processes and governance to match - this may require new and flexible ways of working in the future.
