These posts are ideal for candidates who are looking to gain experience in obstetrics and gynaecology prior to obtaining a training post. The clinical fellows will work at ST1/2 level. The main duties will be to provide ward cover on the antenatal, postnatal and gynaecology wards under supervision, as well as allocated on call sessions on the delivery suite. In addition there will be an opportunity to gain exposure antenatal and gynaecology clinics and in theatre.

The clinical fellow will be trained in the fetal physiology approach to Intrapartum monitoring and the use of STAN monitoring. The clinical fellow will be expected to attend and present at the weekly departmental CTG and perinatal meetings. In addition the fellow is encouraged to attend the gynaecology multidisciplinary meetings in oncology and acute gynaecology. The clinical fellow will be encouraged to undertake clinical audit and contribute to the development of local guidelines.

The clinical fellow will work Monday to Friday from 08.00-16:00 and 1 in 4 weekend with one fellow each day working 08:00-20:00. A sample of the current rota is shown below. This rota has been banded at 1A.

Junior Doctor Structure in department:

The junior doctors working in the obstetrics and gynaecology service are as follows:
1. ST6/7 rota – this is a 1 in 8 rota and provides cover for nights and weekend days ( during the week the senior cover on delivery suite is provided by consultants


1. ST3-5 – this is a 1 in 8 rota providing day time cover on delivery suite and at night
2. The Acute Gynaecology Unit – is staffed by 8 clinical fellows who provide cover from 08.30-21.00 every day


1. Currently 4 clinical fellows at equivalent to ST1/2 grade are employed . The departments plan is to increase this to 8 fellows at this grade that will include 24 hour cover for the service.
