This role is based in Natural England's Private Office. The Private Office team is situated within the wider Legal Governance and External Affairs team. We ensure that Natural England's Senior Leadership team have everything needed to carry out their duties. The team works to support Natural England Senior Leadership and act as a key bridge between the Private Office and the rest of the organisation.

Job description

The Principal Officer to the Chief Executive supports and advises the Chief Executive across a broad spectrum of policy, communication, and engagement tasks. In fulfilling this, the Principal Officer will enhance the Chief Executives’ capacity to engage effectively and strategically on key issues for Natural England:
• The Principal Officer will work closely with the Principal Manager of the Private Office, Senior Managers and Senior Officers and support the Chief Executive to work most effectively with internal and external stakeholders.
• This is an enabling role that requires a combination of focus and flexibility, developing strong relationships internally and externally to receive intelligence on risk and opportunities and influencing to ensure organisational priorities and strategy is followed.

Key tasks and principal accountabilities:
• Daily, working with Senior Officers to the CEO to establish effective systems and processes to review and exercise quality control of all items submitted to the Chief Executive for comments, or signature, including briefings, official correspondence, and press releases.
• Daily, maintain close overview on key Natural England and environment issues by working with teams, and establishing effective processes to provide the necessary information to the Chief Executive.
• Daily, review press and media materials on behalf of the Chief Executive, providing comments on preferences and content.
• Weekly, quality assure and prepare briefings, speeches and talking points for the Chief Executive for internal and external audiences.
• Weekly attend stakeholder meetings, providing advice and support to the Chief Executive.
• Weekly, provide advice on the strategic themes of the Chief Executive’s visits and provide support, if required, to the Chief Executive during visits and engagements.
• Monthly attend NExCo strategy and board meetings to support the Chief Executive.
• Monthly, support the Chief Executive with preparation for Ministerial Meetings.
• In addition to the tasks listed above, the Principal Officer may also be requested to work on specific tasks as requested by the Chief Executive.

This role requires frequent travel to the London office and other locations. This may include some out of hours working.
