Summary


The Paediatric Critical Care team are looking to employ a motivated and compassionate senior nurse to join our friendly and dynamic multi professional team caring for critically ill babies, children and young people and their families and careers. We are based at the Queen’s medical campus and support 14 critical care beds offering L2 and L3 care. You will have a broad critical care experience and insight into caring for critically ill patients and patients with long term health needs which require technology to support them. You will have the ability to support and effectively communicate with the families and carers under distressing circumstances.

The Family Liaison Lead will be required to have a lead nursing responsibility to holistically assess and address the psycho-social, emotional and financial needs of families from admission, during their stay and through to discharge from paediatric critical care.

This is a new role within the team and the post holder will be given the opportunity to develop the role to meet the needs of the families and carers who access the service. This will involve networking with other similar services within NUH and with the Paediatric Critical Care national networks.

To provide effective nursing leadership, expertise, advice and emotional support to families on PCCU to ensure the provision of high quality care to children and families, to address sensitive and complex issues and plan and deliver a compassionate and practical response to these issues

To act as a designated support resource to children and families and other professionals caring for them.

To demonstrate best practice family centred care and employing principles of compassionate leadership.

To facilitate the development of all staff within the Paediatric critical care team in the support of families during times of high distress and extreme circumstances.

To promote an innovative and progressive attitude to the continual improvement of patient and family centred care through audit and research and evidence based practice.

To work in close co-operation with and communicate effectively at all levels within the PCCU team, family support care assistant and multi-disciplinary team (MDT) and outside agencies.

To contribute to the holistic management of long term patients and their families.

To work core hours of Monday to Friday day time hours.

To meet and support families and patients as part of the Spinal complex surgical and NNU pathways.

To complete one clinical shift per 4 week rota to maintain clinical skills and an understanding of current acute nursing challenges.

Deliver training and support on the PCCU Foundation programme study days, PCCU timeout days, MDT training and medical team induction.

The role will include time to maintain and continue to develop their professional competence which will include attending courses in difficult conversations, physiological first aid and counselling skills.

As a senior member of the team, the role will also play a pivotal role in the operational development of their service. They will initiate, manage and drive change within the department, innovating changes in practice for the benefit of patient care in line with current trust and local programmes.
