Summary
This post is to provide support to the effective management of patients under the care of the general surgery service at Barnsley Hospital. The post holder will manage the clinical needs of inpatients with the support of the general surgery team. The post holder will be expected to be an active part in regular in-patients ward rounds, supported by and supervising junior doctors and to liaise any clinical decisions with the responsible consultants appropriately. The post holder will also be involved in elective activities from out-patient clinics along with a consultant to operating theatre in main and day surgery unit and endoscopy when feasible. On standard days the hours of work are expected to be 8am - 5pm. However, this is subject to change where inexceptional unforeseen circumstances may have to perform additional duties to ensure the safe running of the department. With regards to the on-call commitments, the appointed doctor will be expected to work standard days, long days and nights on both weekdays and weekends. The surgical emergency service cover during the day (weekdays and weekends) consists of a consultant, a middle grade surgeon (rota 1:9, to be changed to 1:10 in 2025), FY2/CT/SHO doctor and an FY1 doctor. The night surgical cover consists of a non-residential consultant, residential middle grade and FY2/CT/SHO. An additional part of our emergency service is to cover Surgical Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC) which is supported by a lead consultant, Advanced Nurse Practitioner and Resident Doctor. The out-of-hours service in the Trust is supported by a site manager. This post requires a level of 1st line emergency surgical responsibility. The successful candidate would be working at ST/Registrar level within the Department of General Surgery, Colorectal and Upper GI Surgery. A Flexible Weekly timetable, which would include on average 2 theatre sessions, 1-2 outpatient clinic sessions, Ward round duties, as well as on call commitments as previously stated. You will be responsible for undertaking the administrative duties associated with the care of patients. The General Surgery Department has supportive Consultants and a successful track record of facilitating career progression.
