This involves building a deep understanding of the businesses, their strategy, competition and knowledge of the wider aerospace sector. The post holder will need to build and maintain strong relationships with the company, developing credibility to influence their senior managers when required, with a specific focus on securing increased investment in the UK, leveraged through research and development support. This will often require engagement across the wider team, department and other Government Departments, challenging assumptions and require good judgement on when to compromise so that UK economic growth is realised.

The job holder will need to be able to secure and evaluate information from the business, and use it to make well considered decisions and recommendations. They will need to identify the main issues in complex problems and to consider and manage stakeholder expectations in identifying the best options and agree a way ahead.

The post holder will need to be confident, visible and build and maintain a network of contacts within the sector, the department and across Whitehall, engaging regularly with purpose and enthusiasm to build trust and to generate commitment to achieving outcomes.

This is a busy area where pressures can build quickly and so the post holder needs to be able to remain calm and maintain an effective performance in difficult circumstances.

The post holder will be government's primary contact point for the company.

This could mean working with the company and across government (globally) to consider and progress any number of issues that affect how large multinational companies operate and undertake investment decisions that could impact the UK.

The immediate role of the post holder will be to help consider and deliver research and development grant support and help monitor deliver and impact of projects. The award of R&D grant is the primary mechanism through which we work with the company to secure UK investment decisions both in the near term but also to anchor activities in the UK for years to come.

Alongside R&D activity, the post holder will work with the company and wider government to consider how government can support the company across its business lines, balancing government's priorities against those of the company and where best value for money might be achieved. This will provide opportunities for senior engagement within the department and others.

The post holder will work closely with Ministry of Defence, Dept for Energy Security and Net Zero and other government departments recognising the range of products manufactured by the company. This will require leadership to ensure a 'one government' approach and that Ministers across all departments are alive to the ambitions of the company and how government support might be delivered.

The post holder will need to have excellent communication skills (written and spoken) as well as an ability to think strategically across government's different objectives. The post holder will need to be confident when speaking with the company and able to explain complicated positions both to the company and internally.

The post offers the job holder an excellent opportunity to be at the centre of influencing decisions taken that will impact the UK's aerospace sector for years to come.
