Summary

Main Purpose of job:
To work with young people 18-25 who have special educational needs and/or learning disabilities. You will be supporting a cohort of young people within LB Hackney to transition from education into a supported work placement with the prospect of paid employment as an outcome.

As a Vocational Mentor you will be responsible for helping our young people progress in all aspects of employability, including acquisition of work-related skills, independent travel, in-work job coaching and pastoral support.

You will be working flexibly across the service, carrying out a range of activities both on site and in the community to ensure each young person’s needs are met, along with the project KPIs.
Responsible to: Senior Manager (Supported Internships).

Main tasks:

1. Provide on-going support to a cohort of young people aged 18-25 who have special educational needs and/or learning disabilities who wish to progress into employment.

2. 1-2-1 support of young people in the workplace (Job Coaching) to enable them to thrive on their internship placement. Also working closely with host employers to ensure our young people are successfully integrated into their work place.

3. Assist London Ability Tutor in in-house employability training sessions – classroom support. You will be assisting in preparing participants for the world of work in both group and 1-2-1 sessions.

4. Travel training support to enable interns to travel independently (on local public transport routes if necessary) to and from their work placement.

5. Liaison with employers. Assisting the team with finding and setting up suitable work placements for each participant, based on their aspirations and support needs. Placements will be within Hackney or neighbouring boroughs.

6. Record keeping – including production of attendance records, assessments, progress reports, and employer feedback. Each participant’s progress will be carefully monitored and you will contribute to their annual reviews.

7. Achievement of project KPIs. You will be expected to help the team hit our key performance targets and provide regular feedback to the Project Coordinator and Senior Management Team on our progress towards the project targets.

8. Liaison where necessary with participants’ parent/carers to update on progress and address any issues which may prevent young people engaging with London Ability’s Supported Internship services.


9. Ensure the health, safety and welfare of all project participants and staff is always given priority.

10. Work with other team members to ensure smooth running of the programme.

11. Work in line with London Ability's principles, company policies and procedures, with specific regard to the safeguarding of vulnerable adults.

Person Specification:
Vocational Mentor (Supported Internships)
Selection Criteria Essential/Desirable

Teaching qualification (especially with SEND field) would be advantageous

GCSE grade C (or equivalent) or above in English and Maths.

First Aid qualification.

Car Driver with full UK license.

Excellent knowledge of Hackney and surrounding area, especially with regard to potential local employment opportunities and transport links



Experience in supporting young adults with SEND and associated disabilities to enhance their skills, particularly within a vocational context.


Experience of delivering personalised support for adults with learning and associated disabilities.


Experience of job coaching young people with SEND within the workplace, using recognised TSI principles


Ability to provide positive behaviour support

Ability to work on own initiative and respond to individual client needs.

Good administrative and IT skills.
