Location: Greater Manchester Fire Stations
Business Area: Land & Property - GMCA/GMFRS
Salary: £25,992 - £28,624
Reporting to: Engineering Officer

Are you a skilled joiner eager to apply your craft to an impactful role with Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service? Join us as a Building Craftsperson, where your expertise in joinery, maintenance, and multi-trade skills will help ensure the safety and functionality of our critical facilities.

About Us: Greater Manchester Combined Authority - Maintenance Team

The Greater Manchester Combined Authority (GMCA) Maintenance Team is committed to maintaining the GMCA and Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) buildings. Overseeing a portfolio of 78 properties, our team ensures that our fire stations and facilities remain safe, functional, and ready to serve the community. Operating with flexibility, dedication, and a commitment to high standards, our Building Craftspeople play an essential role in maintaining the resilience of our community infrastructure.~

About the Role

As a Building Craftsperson based primarily at one of our fire stations, you will handle joinery-focused maintenance and repairs, while also applying skills across multiple trades. With a provided van and mobile phone for work use, you will largely work independently to maintain high standards in both day-to-day repairs and broader facility maintenance, contributing to the overall safety and functionality of GMCA properties.

Key Responsibilities

  • Joinery & General Maintenance: Respond to maintenance requests, plan and prioritise tasks to maximise efficiency. Conduct assessments on-site and complete repairs, ensuring high-quality workmanship and a clean work area.
  • Safety & Compliance: Conduct dynamic risk assessments, adhere to safety standards, and apply regulations such as COSHH and Health & Safety at Work. Ensure that all work aligns with GMFRS standards and maintain thorough record-keeping.
  • Multi-Skilled Maintenance Tasks: Perform tasks in other trades within your competence, such as basic plumbing, patch plastering, and painting, contributing to the well-rounded maintenance of our buildings.
  • Tool & Equipment Management: Maintain and secure tools, equipment, and your van, ensuring all are properly stored and not accessible to unauthorised individuals. Complete regular tool and equipment checks before leaving each work area.
  • Collaborative & Independent Working: Work independently with support from the Engineering Officer and assist in training and supervising apprentices and new staff. Communicate effectively with colleagues and contractors to uphold service standards.

Skills & Experience We’re Looking For

  • Relevant Qualifications: Completion of an apprenticeship or qualification equivalent to NVQ Level 3, BTEC Level, or City and Guilds in joinery or similar trade.
  • Physical Fitness & Resilience: Ability to work under physical demands and in challenging conditions, including heights, confined spaces, and exposure to noise, dust, and sewage, all while maintaining safe practices.
  • Proactive & Detail-Oriented: Skilled in independently planning and executing maintenance tasks, you should be capable of responding promptly to unexpected requirements.
  • Effective Communication & Team Skills: Strong interpersonal skills to train apprentices, work with colleagues, and manage contractor relationships.
  • Additional Trade Skills (Desirable): Experience in basic plumbing, tiling, painting, and minor building repairs.

Why Join Us?

This role offers a unique opportunity to apply your skills in support of essential services across Greater Manchester. You will work within a community-focused team committed to the highest standards of maintenance, safety, and sustainability. A full UK driving licence is required due to travel between GMCA/GMFRS sites.
