We’re looking for an experienced Manager with an environmental background to join our Energy and Environment team.
Climate change, resource scarcity, clean air and habitat recovery are some of the key challenges the world is facing today. Northern is committed to reducing its environmental impact whilst seeking to deliver opportunities to enhance the environment we operate in and the communities we serve.
You will play a key part in addressing these issues by providing expert advice and support to our Management team across Engineering Central and West TrainCare Centre's in Blackburn, Manchester and Liverpool, ensuring we deliver interventions and achieve our energy and environment targets and ambitions.
Due to the nature and scale of our engineering activities there is potential to cause significant environmental harm. It is imperative that we maintain strong control measures, a positive environmental culture and high levels of compliance. You will be critical to how we achieve this.

Key responsibilities:
Advise senior engineering teams on energy and environment compliance
Collaborate with teams on investigations, root cause analysis, and solutions for risks and performance issues
Ensure local plans align with legislation, targets and energy and environment strategies
Work with local teams to understand their energy and environmental performance data to drive actions
Support Depot Management in executing energy and environment plans
Track critical activities reporting to Senior Management, investigations and monitoring trends
Reduce environmental risks in projects and identify resource-saving opportunities
Promote an energy and environment culture through communication, training, and outreach
Test and monitor control measures, training effectiveness and compliance checks
Maintain ISO 14001 and ISO 50001 processes locally, including inspections and action tracking and investigation
About you:
You’ll need an understanding of both energy and environmental management systems and legislation with experience in delivering improvements and undertaking incident investigation in a high risk area. We need someone who can hit the ground running!
We’re also looking for someone who has, or is working towards:
Environmental related degree/level 6 equivalent
IEMA Practitioner
With the following skills:
Ability to understand and clearly present performance and compliance information
Can build trust, networks, relationships, Influence, motivate and lead
Translates corporate strategies into local plans
Background in advisory roles addressing issues beyond direct influence
