Summary
The successful candidates will assist Medical Pathologists in the dissection of large resection organs and the processing of small tissue biopsies. The other main elements of the role are the processing, dissection, embedding and microtomy of specialised and routine tissue samples, immunocytochemistry, immunofluorescence, digital pathology and quality control within the department.
The department is constantly developing and has trained Biomedical Scientists in advanced dissection qualifications in the aim of having 80-90% of dissection to be undertaken by biomedical scientists. The department is also currently implementing full digital pathology and training biomedical scientists in histopathology reporting.
Applications are invited from highly motivated and enthusiastic HCPC registered Biomedical Scientists with a Specialist Portfolio in cellular pathology or earlier equivalent
Applications from HCPC registered Biomedical Scientists with a minimum of one years post registration experience in cellular pathology will be considered for employment at annex 21 of band 6. They would be expected to be currently studying for the specialist portfolio in cellular pathology and upon completion will be promoted to Band 6.

The post holder will assist in the day-to-day operations and technical aspects of the service.
The post holder will assist the senior laboratory BMS in the delivery of a high quality, efficient and effective service, through the Quality Management System [QMS]. They will assist in the implementation of change as directed by the laboratory seniors/manager, when delegated or appropriate to service needs.
The post holder is expected to implement policies and procedures ensuring that the service complies with current UKAS standards, national and European legislation and discipline specific regulatory bodies.
The post holder will assist in the training and development of scientific and support staff.
To perform as a HCPC Registered Specialist Biomedical Scientist [BMS] assisting in the delivery of the department services.
Person Specification
Qualifications and Experience
· Degree or equivalent in Biomedical Sciences or a qualification acceptable by the Health Professions Council
· Registered with the Health Professions Council as a Biomedical Scientist
· 2 years current post-registration experience working as a Biomedical Scientist in cellular pathology in the NHS.
· Completed IBMS Specialist Registration Portfolio Assessment in cellular pathology.
· Participation in CPD
· IBMS Specialist Portfolio, or equivalent, in Cellular Pathology
Skills
· Post HPC registration experience in all aspects of routine Histology
· Experience of Embedding
· Experience of Microtomy
· Experience of Immunocytochemistry
· Knowledge of Laboratory Information systems
· Knowledge of Histology cancer pathways
· Knowledge of laboratory Accreditation systems and Quality standards
