Job objectives and responsibilities
We seek a dynamic individual to act as Deputy Director, providing strategic and tactical leadership across the prison. This role will enhance the Senior Management team's mission to cultivate a culture of respect, value, and exceptional service.
The ideal candidate will manage on-call duties, ensuring a safe, secure, and rehabilitative environment for staff and inmates. They will ensure compliance with contractual obligations, legislation, company policies, and HMPPS standards while maintaining operational stability.
Key responsibilities include achieving performance targets, ensuring audits reach Green status for security and living conditions, and complying with self-audits. The candidate will strive to meet HMIP expectations, aiming for minimum Level 3 ratings while preparing contingency plans.
This role encompasses managing operational, financial, contractual, and reputational risks while fostering a culture of rehabilitation, promoting diversity, and reducing re-offending through effective people management.
-Oversee key operational projects in line with the business plan and engage with stakeholders, partners, and the community to ensure regulatory compliance.
-Collaborate with stakeholders to address issues and uphold the prison's reputation, integrating HMCIP expectations into policies.
-Commit to continuous improvement and exceptional service delivery while managing financial aspects and developing budgets to ensure safety and security.
-Handle serious operational incidents and represent the prison within the community to build essential networks.
-Contribute to overall prison operations as a member of the Senior Management Team, focusing on performance measures and policy compliance.
-Support employee metrics on attrition, attendance, training compliance, performance reviews, health and safety, and engagement to foster a positive workplace environment.
Person Specification
The ideal candidate must have extensive experience in prison operational management at a senior level, leading large teams or operations. They should be able to establish a vision for the prison and engage colleagues, partners, and stakeholders to achieve it. A strong alignment with the values of Mitie Care & Custody and an understanding of working in a contractual environment are essential.
-Extensive senior-level experience in prison operations and team leadership.
-Ability to create a compelling vision for the prison and engage all stakeholders.
-Strong alignment with Mitie Care & Custody values and knowledge of contractual environments.
-Proficient in restorative leadership, motivation, and creating an inclusive culture.
-Commercial acumen with the ability to manage budgets and drive transformational improvements.
-Authentic leadership with excellent interpersonal skills and a commitment to integrity.
-Technical expertise in prison legislation, policies, inspections, and the criminal justice system.
-Preferred qualifications include Level 3 or higher, such as A levels or equivalent certifications.
-Relevant training in Silver command, incident management, and adjudication is beneficial.
