Summary


Alongside your Senior pleural specialist nurse you will play a central pivotal role in the management of patients with pleural disease and bring a varied and valuable skillset. The specialist pleural nurse practitioner will play a key role in reducing length of stay and improving the quality of care & experience of care for respiratory patients. They will work across the following areas:

Patient assessment (including bedside thoracic ultrasound) in Accident & Emergency (A&E), Medical Assessment Unit (MAU), short stay wards and other wards within the hospital as required.

Respiratory ward/unit

Outpatient clinics including dedicated pleural clinics

Procedural units including dedicated pleural rooms

Telephone/virtual clinics

Patient & pathway navigation including email, telephone referrals, rapid access / hotline referrals, post-procedure care

All these areas focus on early assessment & intervention in patients with pleural disease, facilitating early supported discharges, admissions and readmissions avoidance and providing holistic care throughout the patient journey. Those taking a role as a specialist nurse will be supported by a Consultant Respiratory Physician & the clinical lead for the service.

You will have the full support of your senior nurse ands Pleural Physicians.



key worker providing support on management of pleural disease and optimising patients and health care professionals options available.

To work with supervision from the Band 7 to learn about the management of patients presenting with pleural disease.

Assist with the running of pleural clinics, assist medical staff with wound care/ stitch removal/ chest drain care

Order and assist with appropriate diagnostic tests

Act a resource for the management and drainage of IPC

Address answerphone messages that are not appropriate for the pleural navigator.

action daily triages, pleural tracking board review

Complete daily nurse-led clinics

To work with supervision from the Band 7 and medical staff to assess patients for IPC removal.

Order Chest x-rays/CT Scans

Competently perform a surgical scrub technique

Prepare the following weeks clinics including checking if CT scans have been reported, ordering chest x-rays and rearranging appointments if necessary.

Assist with the management/ running of consultant procedure list, including the procedure room set up and turn over

Assist within Medical thoracoscopy.

Work towards being Level 4 CiP Emergency Operator in Thoracic Ultrasound
